6A COTTAGE GROVE SENTINEL JANUARY 18, 2017 NEW: Digital X-Rays (use less radiation) Fire department, councilman set record straight BY CAITLYN MAY cmay@cgsentinel.com A comment during an open meeting relayed false information The Jan. 9 Cottage Grove City Council meeting covered a variety of issues facing the city in the coming year including added costs to the Taylor Pump Station project and a review of the city’s budget but it was a comment from councilman Bur- back that garnered attention. During the open meeting, Burbeck used his time during council concerns to address the audience and inquire about a neighbor’s house fi re. In the process, he alleged the fi re de- partment was answering anoth- er call outside of Cottage Grove and took 40 minutes to respond to his neighbor’s emergency. Burbeck said he understood the fi re district was large but was curious as to why the depart- ment’s response time was so long. Burback was referencing in- formation he had received from individuals on the scene and ac- cording to city manager Richard Meyers, presenting questions about the incident to the city council and staff. Since the Jan. 9 meet- ing, more accurate infor- mation has been shared with city offi cials that note South Lane Fire and Rescue responded to the scene in 16 minutes; not 40. “The passage of time is skewed in the case of an emergency,” said Dis- trict Chief John Wooten. “What feels like 15 min- utes was actually fi ve minutes and we see that a lot.” Councilman Burback said he was relaying information he had heard from a neighbor. “Just a misunderstanding and I should have just contacted the fi re chief to begin with,” he said. He noted that he had informed his neighbors of the fi re depart- ment’s actual response time to the incident. Wooten echoed Burback’s statement and noted, “I don’t think he intentionally put that information out there. I think he said what he was told by his Implants •Teeth Whitening • Extractions Lumineers (no prep veneers as seen on TV) Cottage Grove Dental Dr. Brent Bitner, DDS 350 Washington, Cottage Grove (behind Better Bodies) 541.942.7934 constituents.” The Dec. 17 call was one of two that required the depart- ment’s attention; a rarity ac- cording to Wooten but he said rumors circulating that the city of Cottage Grove is left unat- tended when department per- sonnel answer calls elsewhere in the district, are false. Several inter-agency agreements are in place that allow departments in other cities to respond to emer- gencies in Cottage Grove. “It’s just not true,” Wooten said. “Everyone in the district is entitled to be covered but the city is never left unattended.” Currently, South Lane Fire and Rescue operates with seven career personnel on shift, sup- plemented with three resident interns. Industry standards man- date 14-16 individuals on scene of a structure fi re. “Full staff here is seven peo- ple. Full staff in Creswell is four people. But that’s where our agreements come in,” Wooten said. “I’m not the chief to cry over spilled milk. We do what we do with what we have.” Grab a BITE of Cottage Grove R estaurant Eclipse sells out Oregon, not Cottage Grove G U I D E FIESTA CANTINA SPECIALS M-MARGARITA MONDAYS T-TACO TUESDAYS W/FRESH MADE TORTILLAS W-WELLLS DOWN CALLS UP TH-TRIVIA NIGHT FRI. & SAT. On August 21, the sun will vanish. The fi rst total solar eclipse since 1979 is scheduled to pass over 13 states and its fi rst stop is Oregon. As a result, several cities in the state have completely booked hotel rooms and camp- ing grounds. In Cottage Grove, all four lodging facilities are re- porting available rooms for the weekend of the event. “We hadn’t done a campaign because we’re not, in any of the maps that I’ve seen, in the awesome path, if you will,” said Travis Palmer, Cottage Grove Chamber of Commerce Execu- tive Director. Cottage Grove isn’t in the direct path of the eclipse but according to NASA, cities that hundreds of miles outside of the direct path will still be able to see the eclipse which is expect- ed to last for two minutes in the state of Oregon. The eclipse is expected to hit Oregon just after 10:15 a.m. and leave the state just before 10:30 and while hotel rooms in Salem are sold out for a viewing at the city’s fairgrounds, all four of Cottage Grove’s establishments have vacancies. “We are close enough to it that I think it would be worth staying here if you can’t get a spot in the path,” Palmer said. However, due to budget con- straints, the chamber will not be launching a campaign to court potential guests to the city. “I think it’s one of those things that we’ll let people know we’re here and available but to put money into it that we don’t have in the budget when it’s likely we will probably be fi lling those rooms anyway, is not possible,” Palmer said. delicious FAMILY DINING We’ll make you feel right at home with great food and friendly service!
