COTTAGE GROVE SENTINEL Nov. 30, 2016 3B S TATE CONTINUED FROM PG 1B at 21 with just 10 minutes left. The way the game was go- ing, no one in attendance would have thought that would be the last time the Lions would score. Cottage Grove’s lack of size forces the team to rely on its speed, which it has plenty of. However, this time, North Bend had both. The Bulldogs were able to pound the ball up the middle throughout the entire game, but Cottage Grove didn’t want to load up the box, as that would invite a deep pass over the top, which is what eventu- ally happened on the next drive. North Bend threw a 55-yard touchdown pass that was fortu- nately tipped for the Bulldogs. A blocked extra point made their lead 27-21. After another huge defensive stop, North Bend found the end zone once more, this time on the ground, making it a 35-21 game with three minutes left. “When we got to 21, I really thought at that point we were going to fi nd a way to win,” Head Coach Gary Roberts said. “But hats off to North Bend, their players executed down the stretch.” Again, the score doesn’t nec- essarily accurately refl ect how close the game was. Cottage Grove fi nished the game with 21 fi rst downs and 446 yards of to- tal offense, and North Bend had 23 fi rst downs and 473 yards of total offense, which included a 10-play, 99-yard drive in the fi rst half. The Bulldogs punted three times to the Lions’ two times, and they were 52 and 54 percent on third down, respectively. The big difference was the red zone play. Cottage Grove had only a 40 percent success rate in the red zone, whereas North Bend had a 75 percent success rate. Stylistically, the teams were very different. Sentman went 24 for 44 on the night for 368 yards and two touchdowns, and the Lions only netted 60 yards on the ground. North Bend quarterback Brody Lucero was just seven for 13 on the night for 127 yards and a touchdown. But the Bulldogs netted 346 yards on the ground with four touch- downs. For the fi rst time this season, Cottage Grove faced an op- ponent that was well-rounded enough in size and speed to cause problems for a Lions’ team that seemed improbable to stop in the speed department. The athletes were coached and supported by Macauley’s husband, Ed, a nine-time world champion who was disappoint- ed that he couldn’t compete due to falling ill on the days of com- petition. Miller, Macauley and Hen- dricks all represented the Emer- ald Valley Fitness Club, which was founded shortly after the passing of Bud Stewart, a pas- sionate and enthusiastic weight lifter in the area. Miller and Hendricks also represented their local club, Anytime Fitness. “It was just a year of blood, sweat and tears,” Macauley said of the work they put in. The weight lifters don’t begin at a certain time of the year; instead, they train all year for the world championships, which is what credits a lot of their success. “We’re just really grateful for all of our sponsors and sup- porters because it’s not cheap to send us there, and I hope we made them proud,” she added. The group will be striving for new goals for next year’s com- petition. Macauley is going to try to beat her age group’s Or- egon state record of 185 pounds. She attempted 187 pounds dur- ing the competition but wasn’t able to complete the lift. Miller will also strive to break the Oregon state record in the Women’s Masters.
