ber 17, 2016 of natural causes at age 96. A memorial ser-

Smith Lund Mills Funeral Home in Cottage Grove.
Paul was born October 30, 1919 to Paul Gordon Mc-
Coy Sr. and Jessie Kneeland McCoy, in Guthrie Center, Iowa.
When Paul was a young child, the family moved to South
Dakota to farm. Paul attended school in Onida and Des-
met, South Dakota, graduating from De Smet. Paul then
attended South Dakota State College in Brookings, South
Dakota, where he met his future wife, Ruth Evelyn Gordon,
and also earned his degree in pharmacy.
Paul and Ruth were married on December 28, 1943 in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. They were
in their 67th year of marriage when Ruth died of Alzheimer’s Disease on July 7, 2010. P a u l
served in the U.S.Navy as World War II was ending. He was stationed at a military hospital in
Geneva, New York where he assisted medical staff in caring for wounded soldiers who were
returning from overseas.
In the early years of Paul’s pharmacy career in Oregon, he and Ruth lived in Milton-Freewa-
ter, then Hepner, and then Hermiston. During that time they were welcoming their children, and
running a small family farm. Like his father, Paul raised Shetland ponies. He was proud that his
ponies were from the same line as his father’s. He loved the ponies, and he loved sharing them
with others.
Paul lived in Cottage Grove, Oregon from 1959 to 2011, when he moved to Springfi eld to
assisted living. In Cottage Grove, Paul was able to live his dream of having his own pharmacy,
“McCoy’s Pharmacy”. He and Ruth were members of the United Methodist Church and the Faith
Center. Paul was also a member of the Cottage Grove Chamber of Commerce, a charter member
of the Cottage Grove Rotary Club, and he loved singing barbershop with the Cascade Chorus.
In 1959, Paul helped start a men’s bible study/breakfast group that met once a week. The most
recent meeting place was the Koffee Kup Café, which he loved. He was very happy to know that
the group continued, even though he could no longer attend when he moved to a higher level
of care in 2014. Paul was known as a gentle, kind and generous man who followed the “Golden
Rule” and lived his Christian faith, always helping others in need. Paul’s work at the pharmacy
allowed him to get to know and care about many people in the Cottage Grove community, and
he felt grateful for all who knew and cared about him and his family.
Paul’s family would like to thank the staffs at Farmington Square Memory Care, Spring Val-
ley Assisted Living and Sweetbriar Villa Residential Care for the years of excellent and loving
