2A COTTAGE GROVE SENTINEL November 9, 2016 DEATH NOTICE IN MEMORIAM Gilbert Joe Myers 1952-2016 Gilbert Joe “Gil” Myers, 64, of Cottage Grove, passed away Oct. 29, 2016. He was born July 12, 1952 in Cottage Grove to Clare and Lanona (Geer) My- ers. Gil grad- uated from Cottage Grove High School. On June 8, 1974 in Cottage Grove, he and Elizabeth Ourada were married. Gil worked for Weyerhaeuser Lumber Company for over 40 years and retired in June 2016. He had a love and apprecia- tion of nature and was a true outdoorsman who enjoyed both hunting and fi shing. He enjoyed watching college football, was a supporter of the Cottage Grove High School Football Team, and an Oregon State University Bea- vers fan. He absolutely adored his granddaughter and the time that they spent together garden- ing. Gil is survived by his wife of 42 years, Liz Myers; daugh- ter, Lindsey Myers; son, Ryan Myers; mother, Lanona Myers; brother, Neil Myers; sister, Pam Welch; and one granddaughter. A memorial service and re- ception will be held at 4 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 11, 2016 at Smith- Lund-Mills Funeral Chapel, 123 S. 7th St., in Cottage Grove. Charlotte Louise Marx 1918-2016 Charlotte Louise Marx, 98, of Cottage Grove died Oct. 29, 2016. She was born Sept. 19, 1918 in New- ark, Ohio, to parents Warren and Laura (Cur- ry) Patton. S h e worked at Mills res- taurant, where she met her hus- band. She then worked on an assembly line making airplanes during WWII. She later re- ceived a degree from a business college and began working as an accountant with Pacifi c Bell and AT&T, from which she retired. She married David J. Marx in Columbus, Ohio. JOSEPH ALVIN LASSITER 12/9/29 – 10/29/16 Joe was born December 9, 1929 in Conway, N.C. to Calvin Lassiter and Lucy Thelma (Joyner) Lassiter. He married Myrna Ryan Lassiter, January 16, 1953 in Santa Cruz, CA. After graduating high school in 1947 he worked at the Conway Drug Store until joining the Air Force (1949-1952) where he served a tour of duty in Korea. After discharge he at- tended Valparaiso Technical Institute obtaining a Diploma in Radio Engineering Technology (1955). He worked in the aero- space industry as Manager, Engineering Support, Babcock Electronics, Costa Mesa, CA; Publication Coordinator, General Electric Co., Santa Barbara, CA; Supervisor – Heavy Military Electronic Systems, General Electric Co., Syracuse, New York. The family moved to Cottage Grove, OR where he was employed by Lane Regional Air Pollution Authority in Eugene, OR and rose to Program Administrator/Program Coordinator (1971-1982). His interests at this time was raising four children and as a hobby, also raising Angus cattle, fi shing, hiking, at- tending the kids sporting events and visiting the ocean. With the children grown he and his wife Myrna moved to South Beach, Oregon to enjoy the beach and woods with their dogs. Joe was preceded in death by his parents; sister Barbara Johnson; brother Wilton Lassiter and grandson David James Lassiter-McCoy. Joe is survived by his wife of 63 years, their children Mi- chael (Ginger) Lassiter, Robert Lassiter, Jolene Lassiter and Kathleen (Roger) Foster. Grandchildren - Jennie, Lisa, Teresa, Jessica; Kelvin, Joey; Jason, Barbara; Ryan, Robbie; 11 Great Grandchildren, and many cousins, nieces and nephews in North Carolina. Charlotte loved to dance, and called herself “The Dancer” at the Senior Center. She was a member of Daughters of the Nile. Most of all, she liked tak- ing care of her family. Charlotte is survived by her daughter, Sharon Palmer of Cot- tage Grove, two grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild. Booher 1921-2016 Darrel B. Booher, 95, long- time resident of Cottage Grove, died Oct. 17, 2016 at home sur- rounded by loved ones. Darrel was born in July of 1921 in Chadron, Nebr., to Vern and Loretta (Bradfield) Booher. At age 13, the family moved to Cottage Grove, where Darrel graduated from Cottage Grove High School in 1939. He joined the Oregon Nation- al Guard in May of 1939, and was honorably discharged to en- list in the U.S. Army in January 1940. His service in the Army Air Corps took him to Califor- nia, Illinois, Washington, Alas- ka, Florida, and Baton Rouge, Louisiana, where he married his high school sweetheart, Doris Smith. Following the war, Darrel and Doris returned to make their home in Cottage Grove, where they lived and raised their fam- ily. Darrel owned his own auto repair business for many years. In later years, he was in auto- motive sales, and prior to retire- ment worked in maintenance for South Lane School District. Darrel and Doris were married for 71 years. Doris preceded him in death in 2013. He is survived by his three daughters and sons-in-law: Dar- lene and Bob Swearingen of Cottage Grove; Cheryl and Dan Radonski of Rainier, Oregon; and Dorie and Lanny Wilson of Salem, Oregon; seven grand- children and 12 great-grandchil- dren. Box 1146, Cot- tage Grove, OR 97424. Paul Gordon McCoy October 30, 1919 – October 17, 2016 Paul Gordon McCoy, of Cottage Grove, OR, died Octo- ber 17, 2016 of natural causes at age 96. A memorial ser- vice is planned for Saturday, November 19th at 2:00 PM at Smith Lund Mills Funeral Home in Cottage Grove. Paul was born October 30, 1919 to Paul Gordon Mc- Coy Sr. and Jessie Kneeland McCoy, in Guthrie Center, Iowa. When Paul was a young child, the family moved to South Dakota to farm. Paul attended school in Onida and Des- met, South Dakota, graduating from De Smet. Paul then attended South Dakota State College in Brookings, South Dakota, where he met his future wife, Ruth Evelyn Gordon, and also earned his degree in pharmacy. Paul and Ruth were married on December 28, 1943 in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. They were in their 67th year of marriage when Ruth died of Alzheimer’s Disease on July 7, 2010. P a u l served in the U.S.Navy as World War II was ending. He was stationed at a military hospital in Geneva, New York where he assisted medical staff in caring for wounded soldiers who were returning from overseas. In the early years of Paul’s pharmacy career in Oregon, he and Ruth lived in Milton-Freewa- ter, then Hepner, and then Hermiston. During that time they were welcoming their children, and running a small family farm. Like his father, Paul raised Shetland ponies. He was proud that his ponies were from the same line as his father’s. He loved the ponies, and he loved sharing them with others. Paul lived in Cottage Grove, Oregon from 1959 to 2011, when he moved to Springfi eld to assisted living. In Cottage Grove, Paul was able to live his dream of having his own pharmacy, “McCoy’s Pharmacy”. He and Ruth were members of the United Methodist Church and the Faith Center. Paul was also a member of the Cottage Grove Chamber of Commerce, a charter member of the Cottage Grove Rotary Club, and he loved singing barbershop with the Cascade Chorus. In 1959, Paul helped start a men’s bible study/breakfast group that met once a week. The most recent meeting place was the Koffee Kup Café, which he loved. He was very happy to know that the group continued, even though he could no longer attend when he moved to a higher level of care in 2014. Paul was known as a gentle, kind and generous man who followed the “Golden Rule” and lived his Christian faith, always helping others in need. Paul’s work at the pharmacy allowed him to get to know and care about many people in the Cottage Grove community, and he felt grateful for all who knew and cared about him and his family. Paul’s family would like to thank the staffs at Farmington Square Memory Care, Spring Val- ley Assisted Living and Sweetbriar Villa Residential Care for the years of excellent and loving care that they received in their last years . Paul and Ruth are survived by their fi ve children: Nina McCoy (John) of Hanoi, Viet Nam, Mike McCoy (Christy) of McMinnville, OR., Kathleen McCoy Mathson (Randy) of Springfi eld, OR., Linda McCoy of Seattle, WA., and MaryBeth McCoy of Springfi eld, OR., by eight grandchildren: Sean, Eric, Kyle, Ian, Julie, Brian, Jacob, Ethan and nine (soon to be 10) great- grandchildren: Sao- irse, Sophia, Livy, Henry, Teige, Claire, Addie, Asa, and otto, as well as many nieces and nephews . Ardis L. Mestdagh 1929-2016 Ardis L. Mestdagh, 86 of Cot- tage Grove passed away Nov. 3, 2016. She was born Dec. 17, 1929 in Oberon, N.D. to Albert and Lorretta (Johnson) Ploium. A r d i s graduated from Shey- enne High School in ND. On Sept. 7, 1949 in Fort Tot- ten, N.D., she and Oscar Mest- dagh were married. Her career was taking care of her husband and children, and she and her husband, Oscar, owned and operated the Day Dream Tree and Shrub Nursery. Ardis enjoyed woodworking, gardening, carpentry, travel- ing, bowling, playing cards and Bingo, riding horseback and yodeling. She loved spending time with her family. Ardis was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church active in Bible study, Luther League, confi rmation classes and Sunday School. She was a member of the VFW Women’s Auxiliary and Wom- en’s Bowling Association. She is survived by her son, Randy (Valerie) Mestdagh of Moses Lake, Wash., two daugh- ters, Joni (Randy) Denault of Springfi eld, Ore. and Jean Mes- tdagh of Cottage Grove, two sis- ters, Beulah Bujested, Marlene Stenberg and Cheryl Franklin, a brother Kenny Ploium, all of North Dakota, 10 grandchildren and 29 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her spouse, Oscar Mestdagh, in 1988, son, Gary Mestdagh, in 2000, son, Jamie Mestdagh, in 2010, and great-granddaughter, Autumn Lloyd, in 2000. Patricia Lane Shaw, 81, of Cottage Grove died Oct. 30, 2016. A funeral followed by a reception will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 10 at the Smith-Lund-Mills Funeral Chapel, 123 S. 7th St., in Cot- tage Grove. Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 4 at Smith-Lund-Mills Funeral Chapel. David Francis Boyd 1932-2016 David Francis Boyd, 84 of Eugene, Or- egon passed away October 31, 2016. He was born March 29, 1932, in Foster, MO to Francis and Emilie (Parlier) Boyd. David graduated from Sweet Home High School, attended the University of Oregon on a music scholarship and later earned his BS in Industrial Engineering at Oregon State University. He was an Army Corporal during the Korean War and a high speed ra- dio operator. David enjoyed music, the Tenor Sax, traditional jazz and polka music. He married Ruth George on January 2, 1959, in Klamath Falls, OR. David loved God, his family and he practiced a life of conservatism. He greatly enjoyed gold mining, and was always experimenting in self-suffi ciency and survivalism, along with studying alternative energy. David is survived by his wife Ruth Boyd, Eugene, OR, daughter Chris- tine (Harlan) Coats, Junction City, OR, daughter Gayle (Doug- las) Ford, Eugene, OR, son Randy Boyd, Dorena, OR, sister Sue (Lesley) Swope, Portland, OR, sister Virginia Marshal, Cotton- wood, AZ, 2 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. At age 96, Don peacefully passed away at their home on the golf course in Cottage Grove, Oregon. Don was born July 8th, 1920 on a rural farm in Spencer, South Dakota to Naomi (Collins) and Raymond Muth. Don played all sports through both his elementary and high school years, excel- ling at baseball. Upon graduation from Lead High School it was anticipated that Don would seek a career in the baseball leagues, but to the dismay of his parents, he chose to follow his buddies and enlist in the United States Army. Don was proud to serve his county during World War II in the Combat Engineers Unit under the command of General Patton in Africa. He was seriously injured in a land mine explosion re- ceiving extensive abdominal wounds and was awarded the Purple Heart. During his service years Don always found time to play baseball and also took up boxing, holding his own in the ring. Following his time in the service he relocated to Empire, Oregon to be closer to his parents who had moved west. While working at Dunn and Merle Realty, Don struck-up a friendship with James (Jim) Larsen who soon became a long term business partner and friend. Th e two than began sell- ing real-estate for Albertsons Realty in Coos Bay. Finally, in 1961, Don and Jim opened their own realty business Muth Larsen Real Estate on South 4th St in Coos Bay. Don and Jim shared 22 years’ operating a successful real-estate business both retiring together in 1983. February 14th 1977, Don married Phyllis Hackbart in Reno, Nevada. Th is unity brought to- gether Don’s children Larry, Donna and Mike with Phyllis’s children Rick and Lonnie. Phyllis joined Don and Jim in real estate helping open the second offi ce on Broadway in North Bend. Once reach- ing retirement, Don and his wife Phyllis loved to travel, entertain and golf. Th ey were Snowbirds for many years having a home in Bullhead City, Arizona followed by a home in Mesa, Arizona. In 1996, Don and Phyllis moved to Cottage Grove. Th eir love for golf brought them along 18th hole in Middlefi eld Village where they enjoyed their golf course view, singles and couples golf, traveling, company of old friends and making new. Life on the golf course brought Don’s fi rst hole- in-one when in his 80’s, and a second one to follow a few years later. Don was an avid walker as well, rarely missing his daily 2-3 mile walk. He continued to walk until he was 96, although slower, still very determined. Th roughout the year’s children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren of Don and Phyllis have spent many holidays together cooking, sharing stories and making memories. Don is survived by his wife Phyllis of Cottage Grove, children Larry Muth of Coos Bay, Donna Buckles of Coos Bay, Mike Muth and wife Kim of North Bend; step children Rick Hackbart of Eugene, Lonnie Hackbart and wife Donna of Eugene; grandchil- dren Justin Buckles of Portland, Simmie Muth- Vu and husband Tuan of North Bend, Jamie Th ompson and husband Brian of North Bend, Brianna Hook and husband David of Springfi eld and Brittany Hackbart of Eugene. Don also has four great grandchildren Mira and Jet Muth-Vu, Reed Th ompson and Remington Hook. Don was preceded in death by his parents Naomi and Raymond Muth, Brother James Muth and son- in-law Rick Buckles. Don’s family would like to extend thanks to Signature Hospice, Home Care of Eugene for the wonderful care and compassion given to Don. Also a very special thank you to his grand- daughter Brianna Hook R.N. for the loving care provided in her grandfather’s last days. Services were under the direction of Smith- Lund-Mills. Service was held on Tuesday No- vember 8th Following the service there was an open house-Celebration of life at Don and Phyl- lis’s home in Cottage Grove. Don is to be buried during a private family graveside burial in Coos Bay on Wednesday the 9th.
