COTTAGE GROVE SENTINEL Oct. 26, 2016 3B UNDEFEATED CONTINUED FROM PG 1B -nior Zane Levings, who eventually worked his way into the endzone to draw fi rst blood. Elmira was able to respond on their next drive, but that would be all for the Falcons in terms of points scored. In the second quarter, Sent- man hit Hayden Glenn from 12 yards out, but the throw was closer to 25 yards as Glenn was deep in the right corner of the endzone. For a moment, the Lions’ of- fense stalled. After forcing an Elmira punt, stripped the ball out of the hands of Juice Clafl in for Cottage Grove’s fi rst turnover. But the Lions’ defense, which has proven to be stout all year, got the ball right back after Par- ent intercepted a deep ball. The senior shortly caught an 18-yard Sentman pass for a touchdown just before halftime. The game became more de- fensive in the second half. The Lions struggled to convert on fourth down but were able to get close enough for a 32-yard fi eld goal by Erick Giffen in the third quarter, Cottage Grove’s only third-quarter points. However, the Lions didn’t allow Elmira to get anything going either. The Falcons only racked up 56 yards of offense in the second half. Sentman was fi nally able to put the game away in the fourth quarter with a deep pass to Ja- cob Woods, a 34-yard score. The game play of this matchup was slightly different than Cot- tage Grove’s usual performanc- es. The Lions frequently put up large passing numbers, while their rush yards stayed relative- ly low. But against Elmira, the Lions ran the ball 45 times for a total of 234 yards. Sentman was 12-for-23 through the air with 150 yards (though he threw the last three touchdowns). Despite the lower yards, Sentman re- mained a potent passer, getting points when it counted the most. Levings carried the ball 16 times for 96 yards, and Clafl in ran six times for 50 yards. The 31-7 score is surprisingly one of the closer games behind the 24-21 game against Scap- poose and the 34-22 win over Sisters. Coming into the season, the Falcons were heavily hyped as the league favorite. As the Fal- cons and Lions kept winning early in the season, Elmira con- sistently held a higher spot in the OSAA rankings than Cot- tage Grove. However, fi nishing the season with three losses in a row has severely hurt the Fal- con's stock. Cottage Grove now gets a week of rest as they wait to fi g- ure out who they will play on the weekend of Nov. 5. Head Coach Gary Roberts says that the team has earned “one or two” pats on the back now. “We [the coaches] told the team to celebrate until Monday, then after we watch Friday’s game fi lm, we’re 0-0 again,” Roberts said. To recap the regular season, Cottage Grove has outscored its opponents 359-64, which means that they averaged 44.9 points per game, and the de- fense only allowed an average of eight points per game. The Lions’ rushing game totaled 945 yards on the season with 18 touchdowns, while the passing game totaled 2,127 yards and 28 touchdowns. The leading rusher was Levings with 65 carries for 321 yards and three touch- downs, followed by Sentman with 66 carries for 259 yards and eight touchdowns. Over the two games that Parent started as quarterback (and even a few when he wasn’t starting), he was 21 for 23 for 427 yards and sev- en touchdowns. Sentman was an impressive 104 of 177 for 1,689 yards and 21 touchdowns. Giffen led the team in receiv- ing with 33 catches for 372 yards and four touchdowns. Parent had 24 receptions for 308 yards and fi ve touchdowns. In most games, Parent didn’t lead the team in receiving, but that’s because his impact as a leader is defensively, and those statistics aren’t regularly kept. “He’s the best leader I’ve ever had in my time as a coach,” Roberts said of Parent. “It’s like having another coach on the fi eld.” Roberts says that the coaches give Parent a lot of freedom in making his own reads and call- ing his own adjustments on the defensive side of the ball. “His football and athletic IQ are high enough where we can trust him to do that,” Roberts added. Roberts also added that a lot of the defense’s success comes from the team’s ability to listen and trust Parent. Roberts said that the team is determined to get back to work after cel- ebrating a Sky-Em Title and an undefeated season. It won’t be until November that fans will see the Lions take the fi eld to start their playoff run. $ PUUBHF ( SPWF 4 FOUJOFM Our Community Newspaper since 1889 Caring for your Health WE OFFER: 6SLQH&DUH2UWKRSHGLF6SRUWV5HKDE -RE,QMXULHV09$:RUN&RQGLWLRQLQJ )RRW&DUH&KURQLF3DLQ6\QGURPH 6WDELOL]DWLRQ7KHUDS\0DQXDO7KHUDS\ 0F.HQ]LH0HWKRG )5((XQOLPLWHGDFFHVVWR$Q\WLPH Cottage Grove Physical Therapy )LWQHVV&OXEGXULQJFOLQLFKRXUV /XQFKWLPHHYHQLQJHDUO\PRUQLQJ DSSRLQWPHQWV &RQYHQLHQWORFDWLRQZLWKLQWKH6DIHZD\ 3OD]D ???
