COTTAGE GROVE SENTINEL Oct. 12, 2016 FOOTBALL SCOREBOARD CONTINUED FROM PG 1B FOOTBALL Cottage Grove 49 Junction City 7 a solid 4.26 yards per carry (including the 22-yard loss). Cottage Grove’s undefeated status puts them at the top of the Sky-Em, no longer forced to share the spotlight with Elmira. The Falcons suffered their fi rst loss of the season against Sisters on Friday. The Outlaws man- aged to hold the team to just one fi eld goal and handled the Fal- cons 27-3. Elmira’s loss to Sisters was detrimental. For instance, star forward Kia He- menway only just returned after missing several games due to a hamstring issue, and even when she played, she wasn’t 100 per- cent healthy. In almost every game, Shine has had to make a lot of person- nel adjustments because of inju- ries. Senior and newly appointed 3B captain Bailey May was moved from defender to midfi elder re- cently in order to help push the ball upfi eld and score more. “They’re all taking my adjust- ments very well; I haven’t heard of any complaints so far,” Shine said. Cottage Grove is currently last in the Sky-Em League, and even if the team wins out for the rest of the year, it doesn’t look like the defending champs will be able to keep their crown. Caring for your Health the ranks, only one spot below the Lions, and winning out could have put them where Cottage Grove is if not higher, as Elmira was ahead of Cottage Grove for the fi rst half of the season. But the loss has put the Falcons at 19, and OSAA calculations say that perhaps Elmira isn’t as good as originally projected. Cottage Grove is now two wins away from a perfect regu- lar season, but they aren’t just going to cruise through them casually. This week is a potential trap game. There hasn’t been much of a fi ght in any of the Bulldogs' games, which is why it is important that the Li- ons don’t overlook Sutherlin and allow them to steal their fi rst win of the season. But based on Roberts’ atti- tude, the team continues to focus on working hard and improving, rather than celebrating their un- defeated status. The coach says that the team still isn’t guaran- teed a playoff spot and that they haven’t necessarily had much to pat themselves on the back for, including a signature home win (though one could argue that the Scappoose win was defi nitely a memorable one). “We get everybody’s A-game, and Sutherlin has a couple of really good players, and if we sleepwalk through them, they can be dangerous,” Roberts said. Perhaps the signature home win that the team is looking for will be against Elmira next week. But fi rst, the Lions have to travel to Sutherlin and take care of the Bulldogs. VOLLEYBALL CONTINUED FROM PG 1B momentum. However, one of the more outstanding plays by Hirst came from a light tap up and over potential Elmira block- ers after it seemed she was pre- paring for another spike. The battle for the fi rst set wasn’t over. Elmira responded and took a 22-20 lead, getting close to stealing the fi rst set, but once again a Cottage Grove surge had the Lions win the fi rst set 26-24, and from then on, it was their game. Elmira fought, but Cottage Grove was clearly the superior team in the second and third sets and beat the Fal- cons 3-0. The win puts the Lions back at an 8-4 record (4-3 Sky-Em) and puts the team at number 10 in the OSAA rankings. The Lions travel to Sutherlin and Junction City this week before participating in the Marshfi eld tournament in Coos Bay on Sat- urday.
