COMMUNITY BRIEFS R Homecoming Week Homecoming week approach- es soon for Cottage Grove High School. This year, participants will crown Freshman Court, Sophomore Court, Junior Court and Senior Royalty during half time of the football game on Friday, Sept. 30, which starts at 7 p.m. The cost is $5 for adults and $3 for seniors 55 and older. The annual Homecoming Pa- rade will be held Friday, Sept. 30 at 2 p.m. beginning at the high school and ending with a pep rally at Sixth and Main. Come join us for all the fun fes- tivities. Garden Club focuses on fall The Cottage Grove Garden club plans an expansive presen- tation about some of the most important fall tasks, including choosing a cover crop, for its Tuesday, Oct. 4 meeting. As al- ways, the presentation is free and open to the public. The Garden Club meets at The First Presby- terian Church on the corners of Adams and Third Streets. The business meeting begins at 6 p.m. with refreshments follow- ing, and the presentations begin at 7 p.m. 912 Project Larry Bottemiller will discuss his visits to Israel at the next meeting of the Cottage Grove 912 Project on Monday, Oct. 3 at 6:30 p.m. at Stacy’s Cov- ered Bridge Restaurant, 401 E. Main. The meeting is open to the public. Celebrate our farmers The Celebrate Our Farmers event will offer family activi- ties including a farmer’s mar- ket, seed mask making and lawn games at Bohemia Park on Saturday, Oct. 1 from 1-5 p.m. Dinner and dancing will follow at the Bohemia Public Market across the street from 5-9 p.m. More information can be ob- tained by calling 541-942-2360 or visiting sustainablecottage- grove.org. Beds for Freezing Nights seeks volunteers “Beds for Freezing Nights” opens a shelter in one of two local churches when the tem- perature drops to 29º or below from Nov. 15 through March 31. Last season, BFN was open for 11 nights serving a total of 62 guests. One night there were 15 guests. Two volunteers are needed to staff the shelter during each of the following shifts: 6-11 p.m., 10:50 p.m. to 4 a.m., 3:50 to 8 a.m. Responsibilities include setting up/taking down shelter supplies; checking guests in and out and supervising the shelter. Volunteers are required to un- dergo a $10 background check and attend one of the upcoming training meetings: Thursday, Oct. 20 from 6-8 p.m. or Satur- day, Oct. 22 from 9 a.m.-noon at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church, Parish Center, 1025 N. 19th Street, Cottage Grove. Stephanie Johnson at the Fiddle Stephanie Johnson, an R+B/ blues singer who was a featured vocalist on Season 5 of The Voice, will bring her four-piece band to headline the Axe and the Fiddle on Saturday, Oct. 8. Schmale served as manager of Pioneer Title and later was affi l- iated with American Title, hav- ing signed up many hundreds of new homeowners through the escrow business. She has held many positions in the community, including two terms as President of Ro- tary, twice as president of the Cottage Grove Chamber of Commerce, Soroptimist Board and Florence Chamber of Com- merce. She served in many of- fi ces and on many committees with Oregon Escrow Council (OEC) and went back to Wash- ington, DC to testify at Senate Hearings on issues directly af- fecting the settlement industry and Real Estate transactions in general. Rural Art Center Movie Night returns to Lorane Grange on Sat- urday, Oct. 8. They will show the result of the summer fi lm camp, “Tears of the Red Oni”. It is based on a Japanese fairy tale. The main feature is “The Little Shop of Horrors”. Soup dinner precedes the fi lms. For all who knew Joe Cana- day, a longtime Crow resident and Crow Granger, there will be a service on Sunday, Oct. 9 at Crow Grange at 2 p.m. He will be missed. Just want to remind everyone about the Moving Vietnam War Memorial on Sept. 29 in Skin- ner’s Butte Park. It is a very moving memorial, and if you have never seen it, it is worth your time. The Booster Club will host a barbeque Friday evening with several other activities and hopefully a bonfi re and a pow- der puff football game, ending in the parade and coronation of the king and queen. The high school dance begins at 10:30 p.m. This Wednesday, Sept. 28, an open house is scheduled from 6- 7:30 p.m. at Crow Middle/High School. A delicious meal is on the menu this Saturday morning, Oct. 1, for the annual Hunt- er’s Breakfast at the Rebekah Lodge from 6-10 a.m. A break- Jimmie Southmayd 1949-2016 Cottage Grove's Linda Schmale has volunteered with Rotary, Lions, Ki- wanis and other organiza- tions. In the last two years, after her beloved husband of 38 years, Roger, passed, she has volun- teered with many committees on Rotary and the Chamber.
