Lane County to
manage park
Lane County’s Parks Depart-
ment will begin operating and
maintaining Konnie Memorial
Park as part of a 25-year lease
with Oregon Department of Fish
and Wildlife (ODFW).
Konnie Memorial Park is a
145-acre property with a popu-
lar boat ramp and day-use area
near Swisshome along Lake
Creek at the confl uence of the
Siuslaw River.
In recent months, park neigh-
bors have shared concerns about
security issues and illegal use of
the park. Lane County Parks
said it will work to establish a
volunteer park host who will live
on-site to improve security and
provide minor maintenance.
The lease agreement does
not include a fi nancial agree-
ment between Lane County
and ODFW. It does allow Lane
County to charge a parking fee
consistent with other County-
operated parks and to make im-
provements to the property.
Campground
temporarily closed
Upper Skillet Campground
will be staging site for restora-
tion project
After Labor Day, campers to
the South Umpqua River may
want to stay in one of six camp-
grounds while employees of the
Tiller Ranger District use Upper
Skillet Campground as a staging
area for a fi sh habitat restoration
project.
The Upper Skillet Camp-
2 PROGRESSIVE JACKPOTS
ground will be temporarily
closed from Sept. 6-30 because
of heavy equipment operations.
While Lower Skillet Camp-
ground will remain open, visi-
tors may experience a lot of
noise during their stay.
Other campgrounds along the
South Umpqua include Three C
Rock, Dumont Creek, Boulder
Creek Ash Flat, South Umpqua,
and Camp Comfort.
If you have questions or con-
cerns, please contact the Tiller
Ranger District at 541-825-
3100.

BY LIL THOMPSON
For the Sentinel
S
eptember is here, and
with it, school has begun
in the Crow-Applegate-Lorane
School District. Classes re-
sumed yesterday, Sept. 6, for all
students. A warm welcome to
the new high school principal,
Marci Haro, and a welcome to
all the district staff. Please drive
carefully in the early morning,
watching for students waiting
beside the road for their buses.
Lately, we have had some fog,
too. Lorane Grange resumes
its dinner and bingo evenings
with a taco night on Friday,
Sept. 23 at 5:30 p.m. They look
forward to seeing everyone re-
turn to eat and play.
Rural Arts Center is very
pleased to offer FREE group

School each Thursday start-
ing on Oct. 6 from 3:30-5 p.m.

Umpqua Indian Foundation.
The fi rst concert at the Lorane

at 7 p.m.
The RAC movie night sea-
son returns to Lorane on
Saturday, Oct. 18 at Lorane
Grange. The usual fare of soup
and dessert will be enjoyed pri-
or to the movie. I believe the
product of the RAC summer

by everyone that evening.
The ladies of Lorane Christian
Church are collecting cans to
help fund several of their proj-
ects, and they can be dropped
off at the church by tomorrow,
Sept. 8. Call any of the church
women for more information.
