Belknap passed away August 25, 2016 due to age related causes, she was 93. Born September 25, 1922 in Walla Walla, WA to Lee C. Stuart and Merle Carter Stuart, she moved with her family to Eugene in 1927. She was a survivor of polio as a child and had an active life as an only child until her two orphaned cousins, Robert Duncan and Jim Ed Duncan, came from Missouri to be raised by her family. Her beloved Jim Ed was a fi ghter pilot in WW II, dying in a training accident in 1942. Betty graduated from Eugene High School in 1940 and from the University of Oregon with a degree in Social Sciences in 1945. She was a member of the Alpha Gamma Delta sorority, remain- ing active with various sorority matters for many years. She mar- ried Edward J. Belknap December 21, 1946. Betty and Ed enjoyed careers in education and Betty obtained her Master’s Degree in Library Science from the U of O in 1965; she had a passion for books and reading advocacy. Betty’s fi rst teaching assignment was in Dallas, Oregon, in 1947 while Ed pursued his degree at Oregon College of Education. Their fi rst teaching assignment to- gether came shortly thereafter at the town of Valsetz, OR, a “com- pany town” in the coast range west of Salem. In 1951 their son, James Edward, was born. In 1953 the family moved to Eugene where they lived until Ed’s death in 1994. Betty continued to live independently in Eugene until 2013 at which time she moved to Cottage Grove to be closer to her son, Jim. Betty’s last working position was as the librarian at the then Jefferson Junior High school until a surprise in 1964 brought the birth of a second son, Robert Stuart, who tragically was killed in an auto accident in 1983. Betty was a proud Democrat, often saying one of her great- est honors was having been able to vote for Franklin Delano Roo- sevelt in his last election. She was a long time member of the League of Women Voters. She served for eight years on the Beth- el School District Board in the 1970s. Betty was an avid bridge player, enjoying that well into her late 80s. A former member of the Unitarian Church, Betty lived with a commitment to educa- tion and social issues in her community and around the world. She is survived by her son, Jim, beloved daughter-in-law, Ardis, and granddaughters Tamara Belknap, Jennifer Belknap William- son, Dr. Janice Belknap, and Wendy Fuller. Betty was blessed with a truly great grand-son-in-law with Jennifer’s husband, Jason Williamson. Great grandchildren Fisher Williamson and Cleo Wil- liamson were the joys of her fi nal years. A memorial service will be held on Sunday, September 4, 2016 at 3:00 PM at First Presbyterian Church of Cottage Grove, 216 South 3 rd Street. å Division F – Art Glenn Turner: House 1st; Chey- enne Stroud: Wolf Head 2nd; Seth Lebow: Ant & Apple 1st, Dot Water Color 1st, Color 1st; Emily Hughart: Nana Rainbow 1st; Kaley Crites: Wolf Walking 3rd, Cowgirl on Running Ro- deo Horse 1st; McKenzie Her- zog: Lion 2nd; Raina Herzog: Kylo Ren 2nd; Sy Williams: Garden 3rd; Summer Lebow: Avocado 1st; Briahna Guevara: Boy with Backpack 2nd, Girl in Green Dress 1st, Pink Hair 2nd; Kaylynn Guevara: Gray Scale Flower 1st; Chloe Hinkle: Self Portrait 3rd, Unspoken 3rd, #80 3rd; Moira Struthers: Flower 3rd; Paige Hinkle: Begging Lucy 2nd; Kayla Lane: Mul- tiple Animal 3rd, Happy Snow- man 3rd, Kitchen Dream 1st; Tinika Ossan-Steir: Covered Bridge Fettuccini 1st; Penny Schaack: Vase w/Flowers 1st, 2 Cats 3rd; Lorraine Simons: Work Horses, Best of Show, Bird Hunting 2nd; Patrick Dolan: Indians at the Waterfall 3rd, Bulldog on the Scent 1st; Julia Flanders: Girl by the Lake 2nd; Marian Varvel: The Moose 1st, Drapes 2nd, The Turkey 3rd; Horst Hittenberger: PJ Pat- terson (Special Exhibit); Sandra Wiltermood: Swan 2nd; Corky Ford: Dahlia’s 3rd, Koi Fish 1st, Blue Birds 1st; Jenna Buetow Board Certifi ed in Hearing Instrument Sciences Hearing Consultant FREE Hearing Screenings FREE Hearing Aid Checks & Cleanings Just call to schedule an appointment!
