COTTAGE GROVE SENTINEL May 18, 2016 Monday wreck kills 18-year old driver Subaru driven by CG's Connor Fitch was struck by a commercial van A n 18-year old Cottage Grove man was killed in a two-car collision on Highway 99 just north of the City Mon- day morning. Bill Fugate of the Oregon State Police reported that po- lice were called to an area near River Road and Highway 99 at about 8:17 a.m. Monday. He wrote that a 2004 Subaru wagon was traveling northbound when it veered off the east shoulder of the highway. Fugate said the car appeared to over-correct upon reentering the roadway, at which time it was struck on the rear passenger side by a south- bound 2014 Chevrolet commer- cial van. The driver of the Subaru, identifi ed Monday afternoon as Connor R. Fitch, 18, of Cottage Grove, was taken by ambulance to Cottage Grove Community Medical Center, where he lat- er died from his injuries. The driver of the Chevrolet, Bryan A. Ross, 25, of Eugene, was not injured. Highway 99 was closed for three hours while the investiga- tion was conducted. State Police were assisted by South Lane Fire, the Cottage Grove Police Department and the Oregon De- partment of Transportation. On Monday evening, friends and family gathered at Cottage Grove Lake to remember Fitch, a car enthusiast, and well-wish- es and condolences fi lled his Facebook page. Driver hurt in Sunday crash O regon State Police believe that alcohol and marijuana may be contributing factors in a single-ve- hicle accident Sunday afternoon that sent a driver to the hospital with seri- ous injuries, sheared a power pole and caused a power outage nearby. Police with OSP say they were called to the scene of a single-vehicle crash at the corner of Highway 99 and Latham Road at 3:30 p.m. Sunday in which the driver lost control of his vehicle and left the roadway, hitting a power pole. They said that live power lines were resting on the vehicle and paramedics were unable to extricate the victim until the Emerald Peoples Utility District shut off the power. The driver, later identifi ed as 21-year old Jeremiah Jacob Mathews of Cottage Grove, was transported to RiverBend with critical injuries. An investigation into the crash is ongoing. Late Monday morning, Mathews’ grandmother, who asked that her name not be printed, said that Mathews suf- fered a cracked vertebra, a blood clot in his brain, a ruptured spleen and collapsed lung in the crash. She said Mathews was in an induced coma. “I wish young people could learn about what can happen, what happens when you drive drunk,” she said. “He is the love of my life. I've raised him since he was 11. He's a sweet boy.” Farmers Market hopes to thrive on Thursdays Will happen downtown from 4-6 p.m. BY JON STINNETT The Cottage Grove Sentinel O rganizers say a steady stream of visitors checked out the offerings at the fi rst South Valley Farmers Market, held Thursday af- ternoon at the corner of Seventh and Main Streets in downtown Cottage Grove. About a half-dozen local farm- ers showcased produce consisting largely of leafy lettuce and other greens as befi tting the time of year, and Drew Renault of High Wire Farm said the market, which is scheduled each Thursday from 4-7 p.m. across from All-America City Square, said the event generated a “lot of foot traffi c.” Renault said he’s thought for some time now that a farmers market might marry well with the weekly Bread Club event that draws a crowd to the Burkholder Woods Building. “There have already been quite a few people stopping by that I’ve never seen before,” he said. In addition to High Wire, repre- sentatives from Branch Road Farm, Brice Creek Croft, Cox Creek Farm, Ruby and Amber’s Organic Oasis, Keizer Creek Farm and Star Ranch showcased their wares. The market represents Cottage Grove’s latest at- tempt at establishing a new farmers’ market for locally grown produce following the split of a Wednesday growers market with the Chamber of Commerce’s Concerts in the Park series, a pairing that thrived in Coiner Park. The Chamber announced prior to its 2014 season that it would re- locate the market from Coiner to nearby Bohemia Park, but the new park setting drew few farmers will- ing to sell their produce at Bohemia, reportedly due to the lack of shade S HERRY Y OSS 541-554-2044 T AWNY L OWREY 541-554-2044 GRI, Broker, Multi-Million $ Producer GRI, Broker, Multi-Million $ Producer 3A photo by Jon Stinnett Drew Renault (left) of High Wire Farm talks to a customer at Thursday's fi rst South Valley Farmers Market. in the new park. Renault said the South Valley Farmers Market will take place into October. The Warren H. Daugherty Aquatic Center in Cot- tage Grove, Ore., will host the fi fth annual Water Safety Day on Saturday, May 21 from 1-3:30 p.m. Children of all ages and their parents can learn about swimming and boating safety through a vari- ety of activities at this free event. The Lane County Sheriff’s Offi ce Search and Rescue Team will host a life jacket exchange dur- ing the event. Children can exchange old life jack- ets for better-fi tting ones. The rescue team will also have their patrol boat on site and will share tips on how to stay safe while boating. Children will also have the opportunity to meet the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers mascot, Bobber the Water Safety Dog. Through free printed mate- rials and online cartoons (www.Bobber.info), Bob- ber teaches children how to stay safe while visiting Corps reservoirs, such as nearby Cottage Grove and Dorena lakes. The pool will offer a free swim following the wa- ter safety stations. Participants are asked to bring suits and towels. Those seeking more information can contact Carrie McCasline at 541-942-5533.
