Anoth- er impressive freshman fi nish was by Cottage Grove’s Paesen Timm in seventh place with a time of 9:45.53. The race of the day was the boys’ high hurdles. For a while, Tharpe had been fi nding himself on top in many meets during the middle of the season. However, Friday’s hurdlers were just as sharp as Tharpe. Henley holds two seniors that have previously broken 15 seconds. Seth Andres and Dylan Castle took fi rst and second respectively with times of 15.03 and 15.08 seconds. Tharpe fi nished in fi fth with 15.37 behind two runners from North Bend and Hidden Valley. On the fi eld events, Brad Geisler took fourth in shot put with 44 feet, 11.5 inches and fi fth place in discus with 145 feet, fi ve inches. Considering that both events had over 35 competitors, Geisler was defi - nitely among the elite fi nalists of the day. The long jump saw Jayden Tucker and Reily Boyce step up. Tucker fi nished in fourth with 20 feet, 5.5 inches, and Boyce fi nished in sixth with 19 feet, 10 inches. Boyce is not al- ways a regular in the long jump event, but his sprinting ability has given him an edge in the long jump. On the girls’ side, Hannah Albrecht helped her team with a strong 100-meter dash perfor- mance, giving herself a time of 13.15 seconds and a third-place fi nish overall. The junior placed third again in the 200-meter dash with 27.4 seconds. With her recent performances, head coach Ricky Knutson says she seems to be in great shape for the upcoming important races. Hudson Weybright and Bre- anna Wright didn’t appear in the distance races, but Wright placed fi fth in the 800-meter race in 2:25.47, and Weybright fi nished eighth with 2:27.24. The invitational was the last meet before the district meet, which will also be held in Cot- tage Grove. And while the Lions didn’t do as well as last week, that’s not to say that there won’t be improvements at districts. For instance, Cottage Grove hosted three Sky-Em teams out of the 18 competing, and the boys beat all three by a solid margin. The girls only lost to Sisters but came out ahead of Sweet Home and Elmira. With other athletically deep schools competing this past weekend, Cottage Grove had trouble fi nd- ing consistency in being in top positions. After the races, Scott did not go to the scales, so that bumped everyone a position and gave Eugene driver Eddy Mesceji the offi cial fi fth-place fi nish. K.C. Scott was the fast time of the night in time trials, and Joe Maricle won the Dot’s Trophy Shop Trophy Dash. Heat race winners included Scott, Josh Corley and Mike Simmons. Cottage Grove Speedway gets back underway with a double- header weekend. Things kick off on Friday, May 13 for the fi rst $5 Fast Friday. Spectators that are 13 years or older get in for just $5 and 12 or younger are free. Racing will be start- ing a little bit later then normal and things are expected to get going at 7 p.m. Classes racing include the Clark Printing Ex- treme Sprints and the PHRA Dwarf Cars. Then, on Saturday, May 14, CGS hosts Grad Night. All se- nior high school students that have a student body card get into the races for free.
