COTTAGE GROVE SENTINEL April 27, 2016 three and two RBIs, respec- tively. But the important detail to take away is not in individual performance, but the quantity of batters getting on base. The last time Cottage Grove played Sutherlin, only four managed to get hits and the Lions fi nished with a batting average of .167 in their 3-0 victory. This recent performance has displayed out- standing improvement among the Lions and has perhaps an- swered any questions about the team’s ability to get on base. Regardless, the Lions have only one league loss to a team they no longer have to worry about, and recent trends sug- gest Cottage Grove holds the most realistic chance to take the Sky-Em. Cottage Grove hosts one more game against Suther- lin this week before moving on Junction City. A total score is accumulated for each individual’s three perfor- mances. The ages for competition are grouped as follows: seven and eight, nine and 10, 11 and 12, 13 and 14. Each age group will have the chance to compete at four levels of competition which in- cludes the Team Championships at a Major League ballpark and the National Finals at the 2016 MLB All-Star Game. The fi rst and local level will be held at the Bohemia school ballpark on May 7 at 10 a.m. The individual pitching, hit- ting and running champions, along with the all-around cham- pion in each age and gender group at the local competition will be advance to the sectional level. Registration is free and forms are available at the Sentinel or can be acquired through the Li- ons Club. though Knutson warns of stiff competition in the 4A class. “There are two guys from Henley who have already bro- ken 15 seconds,” he said, “but Coach Bridgens has been work- ing hard with Michael on his hurdling technique. Moving away from the track, one of the more notable perfor- mances came from the arm of Brad Geisler. Geisler took ninth in the shot put throw with a dis- tance of 41 feet, 11 inches, and then he stood out in the discus. While a senior from Nestucca seemed to control both the shot put and the discus, Geisler stood out by taking second in the dis- cus throw with a distance of 139 feet, three inches. The Nestucca senior Brett Elder threw over 155 feet, smoking the rest of the competition. But with that throw, Geisler achieved a new personal best by about eight feet. Other mentionable placements were Jayden Tucker fi nishing in third for the long jump (19 feet, 11 inches), Tucker Porter in sixth for the triple jump (40 feet, 7.75 inches) and Konrad Raum placing sixth in the 3000 meter with a time of 9:38.81 seconds. The team will travel to Stay- ton on Friday and look to con- tinually progress as the district meet (which takes place at home this year) draws closer.
