COTTAGE GROVE SENTINEL April 20, 2016 Cottage Grove High School Athletics Schedule Speedway CONTINUED FROM PG 1B start Shawn Hand would again lose the lead. But this time it would be to Eugene’s Andrew Mathers. Mathers, in his fi rst career Modifi ed start, looked very impressive and would build a decent-sized gap between him and the rest of the fi eld, but unfortunately all of his hard work would vanish due to several cautions occurring. Chris Frisbie of Vancouver, Washington would get past Mathers on lap 10 after battling back and forth. Frisbie would get passed a few laps later by Jorddon Braaten from Central Point. Braaten would stay in the position the rest of the way to pick up the win in his No. 84 Dirtworks. Chris Frisbie was second, and Jasper veteran Gene Ashley was third. The rest of the top fi ve would consist of Shawn Hand and Mike Medel in fourth and fi fth. Jorddon Braaten would have a perfect night with being the fast- est in qualifying and winning the Dot’s Trophy Shop Trophy 3B Dash. Braaten and Chris Fris- bie were the heat race winners. Last but not least, the Quality RV Repair Hornets would put on an entertaining race. No doubt one of the most impressive per- formances was Veneta driver Brad Moffett leading for much of the feature. Moffett would be the car to beat for the fi rst six- teen laps of the scheduled 20. Moffett would be overtaken by Joe Maricle of Veneta. Maricle had to come from the back earlier in the race due to jumping a start. It looked as if Maricle was well on his way to the win, but a late race restart would have Josh Corley get to the front. Corley, of Westfi r, would hold on for the fi nal lap to pick up his fi rst win of the season in his fi rst start. Joe Maricle was second while Mike Simmons from Cottage Grove was third. Redmond’s Ray Augustine would place in fourth, and K.C. Scott placed fi fth. Dexter’s Mike Swaim would set quick time. Mike Simmons got the job done in the Dot’s Trophy Shop Trophy Dash, and heat race winners were Swaim, Mike Simmons, and James Sim- mons from Eugene. Cottage Grove Speedway re- turns to racing on Friday, April 22 for the fi rst Kage Kart race of the year. General Admission is free and Pit Passes are $10, and Car and Driver fees will be $35. The Pit Gate will open up around 3 p.m. and the Pit Meet- ing is at 6 p.m. with Hot Laps and Racing to follow. The ¼-mile will be back in action on Saturday, April 23 for the Spring Showdown. The 360 Sprints will return for the fi rst leg of the Interstate Sprint Car Series Triple Crown along with Late Models, IMCA Sport Mods, and the Quality RV Re- pair Hornets. Stayton @ Santiam Track and Field CONTINUED FROM PG 1B ever, freshman Konrad Raum took second place with 4:31.30, 10 seconds behind a senior from sisters. Tharpe also won the 110-me- ter high hurdles, although his time was signifi cantly slower than his personal best of 15 sec- onds fl at. His winning time was 15.96, but in a more competitive atmosphere and with sharper starts, his time will only con- tinue to improve. Even though the boys were dominating the board, Knutson said it wasn’t their best perfor- mance. “Their marks and their times were that fast, the guys just seemed really heavy, especially on their starts,” Knutson said. He believes that it was due to hav- ing so many meets leading up to this one and its understandable that there will be some slower days. On the fi eld side of the meet, however, Knutson was pleased with several events. Cottage Grove took fi rst through fourth place in the shot put, with senior Brad Geisler leading the way. Geisler fi n- ished with a throw of 44 feet, 10 inches. He also set a personal best in a preliminary throw that broke 45 feet. Knutson said he was particularly impressed be- cause he had three throws break 44 feet. The Cottage Grove girls didn’t control the meet like the boys did, but that’s not to say there weren’t impressive perfor- mances. Melissa Powers had a per- sonal best in the javelin, taking second place with 111 feet, one inch, only to be beat by one inch by a junior from Sisters. Melissa Thielman and Jaylene Forrester took fi rst and second in the high jump, and freshman Cassidy Herbert beat out her teammate for fi rst place in the discus with a throw of 86 feet. On the track, Abril Leal and Breanna Wright took home fi rst in the 1500-meter and 800-me- ter races, respectively. The team was missing Han- nah Albrecht, who has been out with an Achilles issue. “We’re hoping to rest her on Thursday and get her healthy for Satur- day,” Knutson said. Albrecht has been a vital part of the team’s success on the track. With the home-fi eld advan- tage, Cottage Grove looked to end the game on their terms. And that they did. In the bottom of the eighth, Payton Presley stepped up to the plate with a man on base and knocked the ball out of the park for the Lions’ fi rst home run of the season, the Lions’ 10th win and the top seed of the Sky-Em League. Once again, the Lions batting average was signifi cantly below that of their opponent’s. Cottage Grove held a .242 batting average and the Falcons had a .303. Usually it would be about the Lions base running, but even in this game, they had stolen fewer bases than the Falcons. The win is chalked up to just getting the right hits at the right time, including Pre- sley’s game-winning two-run home run. The Sky-Em top seed went to Cottage Grove, but it isn’t necessarily smooth sailing from here. After their win against Elmira, the Lions traveled back to Sisters, where they suffered a 6-0 loss to the Outlaws. Cot- tage Grove faces Sisters one more time (in Cottage Grove) and then travels to Sutherlin on Friday. Baseball CONTINUED FROM PG 1B early in the fi rst and second innings, including a double by Hunter Harris that brought in three runs, giving the Lions a 5-0 lead. But the Sky-Em lead- ers wouldn’t be taken care of so easily and shut down Cottage Grove for four straight innings while the Falcons slowly crept back into the game. By the end of the sixth inning, Elmira had tied the game at 5-5. After no one scored in the seventh inning, the game went into an extra in- ning. The Lions held on in the top of the eighth without giving up any more runs.
