Churches unite to reduce child abuse, neglect BY CINDY WEELDREYER For The Sentinel A single dad is laid off and his three-year-old daughter needs child care he can’t pay for while he looks for a new job to support her. A desperate mother delays an important surgery because she has no one to care for her twin toddlers while she recov- ers. A court orders a mother into an addiction treatment program and she needs a safe place for her child while she gets clean and sober and learns strategies to stay that way. These are circumstances in life that threaten the health and safety of families every day. Statistics show there were 40,000 calls to Oregon Child Protective Ser- vices (CPS) in 2000. In 2011, that number jumped to 74,000. In Lane County, of the approximately 5,000 calls per year reporting suspected abuse or neglect, roughly 1,000 cases are opened. Safe Families for Chil- dren (SFFC) works to assist the other 4,000 families who are in crisis and need extra help to bring balance back into their lives. SFFC began in Chicago, Illinois in 2003 and is now in 78 locations, in- cluding fi ve in Oregon. SFFC provides temporary respite care for families in crisis by activating a network of vol- unteers within faith communities. Eight Cottage Grove churches have initially signed up for the program designed to reduce child abuse and neglect and the number of children in state care by supporting families through a rough time. Participat- ing church representatives, program staff, Mayor Tom Munroe and County Commissioner Faye Stewart gathered at the Armory for the March 5 ribbon ceremony to commemorate and cel- ebrate the launch of Safe Families for Children in South Lane County. Safe Families is a program of Chris- tians as Family Advocates (CAFA), a Eugene-based group of mental health therapists who offer services and sup- port to adults, children and families. photo by Bruce Kelsh Elected offi cials and participating church representatives gath- ered on March 5 for a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the Cottage Grove Armory to launch the Safe Families for Children program to reduce child abuse in South Lane County. L-to-R: Amanda Hinkle of Calvary Chapel, CG Mayor Tom Munroe, Lane County Com- missioner Faye Stewart and Emily Johnson of Safe Families for Children. Safe Families is a partnership of the volunteers, churches and community members, and CAFA provides infra- structure and training and oversees the applications, background checks and home studies. Emily Johnson, CAFA’s Commu- nity Program Coordinator, described CAFA’s history and the services it provides. “CAFA has the goal of making a safer place for children,” Johnson said. “It’s been meeting the mental health needs of Lane County since 1994. Safe Families for Children was introduced to us in early 2014 and we knew almost immediately we needed to help bring this program to Lane County.” At the kickoff ceremony SFFC Lane County Director Angela Ard said the Safe Families movement is successful only when entire communities come together to support both the volunteer host family and the biological family they are helping. “Protecting at-risk children is a collective effort and we are very grateful for everyone who has stepped up to help,” Ard said. “We are excited about the way Cottage Grove is working to provide a safe place for kids. There is a role for everyone in Safe Families.” She added, “Host families are al- ways needed, as well as support volunteers to help with childcare, transportation, meals, and supplies. Anyone interested in joining the movement can request a presentation for their congregation or small group or give us a call. And for those who know of a family going through a cri- sis who may not have a safe support system, give them our number so we can help.” Please see SAFE, Page 11A CHURCH BRIEFS - WEEKLY EVENTS CHURCH-SPONSORED COMMUNITY DINNERS Mondays – United Method- ist Church (Second and third Mondays only) at 5 p.m. Tuesdays – Trinity Lutheran Church at 5 p.m. Wednesdays – Covered Bridge Church of The Nazarene at 6 p.m. Thursdays – Trinity Lutheran Church at 5 p.m. BAHA’I FAITH TEA AND PRAYERS Local gatherings are hosted by members of the Baha’i Faith in selected Cottage Grove sites and neighborhood homes.
