COTTAGE GROVE SENTINEL January 27, 2016 WRESTLING CONTINUED FROM PG 1B The Lions struggled even more so against North Marion. Of the 15 matches, Cottage Grove only came out victori- ous in three of them, one from a forfeit. Andrew Bordeaux man- aged to pin Damian Chavez in the fi rst period, and Elijah Far- rell fi nished by pinning Ramon Organiz in the second period. Philomath proved to be less of a challenge for the Lions, who dealt with the Warriors 48- 26. Cottage Grove won eight of the 14 match-ups, and all eight resulted in pins. Rolfe, 3B Wrestling Scoreboard Boitz, Chamberlain, Woertnik, the Bordeaux brothers and Far- rell all won by pin. Farrell’s pin came within the fi rst 40 sec- onds, and Allen managed to pin Cody Chambers of Philomath in under 30 seconds. Overall, 1-2 in a dual meet is not where the Lions would like to see themselves, and at the Phoenix Multi-Dual meet, they changed their fate and went 3- 0 against North Valley, Phoenix and Rogue River. The Lions started out lucky with two forfeits against Chance Ralston and Rolfe, but nonethe- less they started off hot with a 12-4 major decision win from Boitz over North Valley’s Chris- tian Garfi eld. Kripeerapan found redemp- tion by pinning Haleigh Wag- man in the fi rst period. North Valley ultimately ended with six forfeits, giving the Lions an easy 64-16 win. The dual against Phoenix was much closer and was a great Tri- umph for Cottage Grove. Boitz was able to pin Elijah Leonis in the fi rst period after Phoenix started out ahead with a pin and a decision win. Allen then simi- larly pinned his opponent in the fi rst period directly after Boitz. However, Kripeerapan, Cham- berlain and Woertnik all lost to their opponents: by pin, major decision, pin and pin, respec- tively. It was Alan Bordeaux and Andrew Bordeaux that came out with two wins that helped the Lions get back into the dual. Alan won by major decision (10-2) over William Frazee, and Andrew pinned Garrett Truex in the second period. Stalder kept up the work by beating Justin Knight, who fell to an injury. A forfeit in the penultimate match up and a pin by Adam Lamb gave Cottage Grove the edge to win, 40-37. Finally, the Lions took care of Rogue River with ease. Aside from the three forfeits, Cottage Grove won 10 out of the 11 match-ups with the only loss being by Woertnik, who lost by a 13-8 decision, a hard-fought match. After struggling at home, the Lions managed to sweep their way through Phoenix on Satur- day, beating all three opponents. Cottage Grove travels to Sis- ters on Thursday, Jan. 28 for a league dual, looking to continue their Sky-Em success. Dukes raced by himself against two other North Eugene swim- mers. Dukes placed third, giv- ing the Lions three points, and North Eugene took fi rst and second, giving North Eugene a huge boost of 10 points. Dukes was later outnumbered 3-1 again by North Eugene, this time on the 500-meter freestyle race. He blew the competition away with a time of 5:32.56 and a fi rst-place fi nish, but with North Eugene’s three partici- pants getting second, third and fi fth fi nishes (Junction City oc- casionally participating, placing fourth in this race), that gave them eight points to Dukes’ six, the Highlanders were able to stretch their lead. The Lions were occasion- ally outdone on even matchups, however. On the 266 freestyle relay, Burleson, Pifer, Clure and Chambers came second to North Eugene, fi nishing with a time of 2:50.14. Chambers and Clure managed to snag fi rst and fourth place respectively in the 100-meter backstroke, giving them eight points to North Eugene’s seven, but by then, the lead seemed too great to be overcome. The meet was fi nished with the 400-meter freestyle relay, where Dukes, Witt, Chambers and Burleson came in second with a time of 2:53.25; North Eugene fi nished in 2:47. The Li- ons lost 82-66 but were not dis- couraged by their performance. “I feel really good about how they swam,” Head Coach Tyson Pilling said. “It’s just a bummer that we were occasionally a man or two short.” Set & Spike Volleyball Team Sets in the City Nice Hits Markham Electric Olsson Electric Horners Misfi ts W 31 28 27 20 9 1 L 8 11 12 19 30 38 Golf: Middlefi eld Men's Club Monday, Jan. 18 Game: 3 Best Ball First Place Larry Emery Jack Doleman Don Hanly Bob McCarty -20 Second Place Steve Erickson Gary Ingram Jerry Pennington Gary Sparks -18 Third Place (tie) Bill Avery Gary Rider Dick Winters Dan Smith -12 Mike Helms Gary Sparks 73 73 Third Place (tie) Bill Wilson Pat Rickard Dave Tooker Gary Culp -12 Low Net Gary Ingram Gary Culp Jack Doleman Jerry Pennington 60 64 65 65 Low Gross Gary Ingram Dan Smith Thursday, Jan. 21 Game: 3 points First Place Bill Avery Frank Gates Phil Hamilton Dan Smith 130 Third Place Larry Eyman Leon Hayes Darrell Lee Gary Sparks Second Place Jake Cox Jack Doleman Frank LaCosse Gary Welch 128 Fourth Place Jim Hoover Deross Kinkade Dave Tooker Jim Wamsley 71 72 Low Gross Jake Cox Dan Smith Jack Doleman Gary Sparks Steve Erickson 127 123 67 71 75 75 75 Closest to the Pin #5 Gary Ingram #7 Dan Smith #14 Phil Hamilton Longest Putt #11 Jake Cox Low Net Leon Hayes Jim Hoover Dave Tooker Frank Gates Don Hanly 59 62 62 63 64 Closest to the Pin #5 Jake Cox #7 Jake Cox (hole-in-one) #14 Bob McCarty Longest Putt #18 Frank Gates The businesses on this page are: Cottage Grove Lions SUPER FANS They proudly support our local athletes and students Please show your appreciation by patronizing their businesses.
