COTTAGE GROVE SENTINEL December 30, 2015 Back to the drawing board for girl Lions After grabbing their fi rst win in Siuslaw, Cottage Grove found itself back with the same struggles the team has had all season BY SAM WRIGHT The Cottage Grove Sentinel After a memorable victory in Siuslaw, the girls’ basket- ball team fell back into famil- iar waters when they traveled to Salem to play the Blanchet Catholic High School Cavaliers on Tuesday, Dec. 22. The Lions lost 74-45, another loss by over 20 points. Cottage Grove was outscored in every quarter, but the game ran away from them in the sec- ond quarter, when they were outscored 25-11. The Lions were 13 of 36 on fi eld goals (36.11 percent) compared to Blanche, which scored 24 of 53 (45 percent), 11 of which were three-pointers (the Lions missed all six of their three-point at- tempts). Cottage Grove did, however, win the rebound battle, with 31 rebounds compared to Blan- chet’s 29, and they also were up on free-throws (19 of 28 to Blanchet’s 15 of 24). But re- gardless, those statistics didn’t help as the Lions' 29-point defi - cit was insurmountable. The leading scorers for the Lions were Hannah Arnold with 17 points and Taylor Harsh with 11. The previous week, it was Harsh’s three three-pointers that sparked a comeback to win in Siuslaw. Melissa Thielman had six points, Dana Caro had four and Hannah Albrecht and Ellie Brown had three apiece. If the Lions did well on re- bounds and shooting from the free-throw line, what was it that went wrong? The Lions turned the ball over a total of 27 times. Compare that to the Cavalier’s 15 turn- overs and it’s easy to see where they went wrong. Blanchet had 28 points off of turnovers, so one can only imagine the score difference had the Lions main- tained better control of the ball.
