On Tuesday, Dec. 15, the Lions lost their sixth straight game to North Bend, leaving the girls still winless. In their 51-23 loss, Cottage Grove made only nine out of 30 attempted fi eld goals, made no three-point shots, and were only 22.73 percent from the free throw line. The Lions man- aged to hold the game quite close throughout the fi rst two quarters. By halftime, the score was only 23-15, a surmountable eight-point defi cit. But sadly, the Lions were outscored 20- 0 in the third quarter, and after that, it was all North Bend. Cottage Grove did see a new- comer in freshman Tara Child. The JV starter was able to see some playing time during the game and was one-for-one on fi eld goals. The top scorers of the game were Hannah Albre- cht, Hannah Arnold and Tay- lor Harsh, all with four points apiece. For this game, every- one’s numbers were pretty low. But if there’s anything to be said about the girls’ basketball team it is that they have unwav- ering poise and the ability to stay focused amid all of the frus- tration. Friday, Dec. 18’s game proved just that. Coming in at Photo by Sam Wright Freshman Tara Child stepped up on Tuesday from JV to help her varsity Lions against North Bend. 0-6, after losing by more than fore they began mounting their with seven offensive and seven 20 points for the fourth time in a comeback streak. Wrestling team places well at Grants Pass Cottage Grove places sixth overall at Winter Kickoff Tournament Rose Witt swims the 100-meter butterfl y. Aqua Lions doing well, still room for improvement BY SAM WRIGHT The Cottage Grove Sentinel The Cottage Grove High School swim team hosted Junc- tion City and Marist on Tuesday, Dec. 15, looking to show more impressive times as they did the week before. Due to the amount of participants from each school in each event, it was Marist who dominated the scoreboard, the boys winning 128 to Cottage Grove’s 70 and Junction City’s 34, and the girls from Marist winning 129 to the Lion’s 97 and Junction City’s 8. The Ti- gers only had two participating girl swimmers and only four on the boys' team. The competition therefore fell between Cottage Grove and Marist; however the latter still maintained more participants in each event. Seth Chambers, Johnny Witt, Chris Clure and Josef Pifer kicked things off in the 266 meter medley relay, fi nishing second out of four with a time of 3:01.22. In the 133 meter in- dividual medley, Johnny Witt took fi rst place with a time of 1:27.03. Other fi rst place winners were Ethan Burleson at the 100- meter freestyle with a time of 58.85 seconds. Witt shortly af- ter had an extremely impressive time in the 500-meter freestyle with 5:30.25, taking another fi rst-place spot. Pifer fi nished that race third with 6:24.28. The last two fi rst place fi nishes were by Chambers in the 100- meter backstroke with a time of 1:06.06 and then the original relay group (Chambers, Witt, Clure, Pifer) winning the 400- meter freestyle relay with a time of 4:14.06. Unlike the boys, the Cottage Grove girls participated in all of the events, which kept things closer in terms of points. Al- though the girls scored higher in total than the boys (97 compared to 70), there was not a single fi rst-place fi nisher amongst the Aqua Lions on the girls’ side. BY SAM WRIGHT The Cottage Grove Sentinel The Cottage Grove wrestling team trav- eled down to Grants Pass this past week- end to participate in the Grants Pass Winter Kickoff tournament. The Lions placed sixth overall out of 36 participating teams. Cottage Grove saw a big win from senior Alan Bordeaux who beat Austin Tillery of Henley in the tournament quarterfi nals. Last year, Bordeaux lost to Tillery in the state semifi nals. But the Lions saw success else- where. At 120 pounds, senior Bryce Allen placed third overall, at 160 pounds; Alan Bordeaux placed third and at 170 pounds and his twin brother Andrew Bordeaux fi nished second overall. Other honorable mentions were junior Seth Morris who placed 6th at 195 pounds and sophomore Adam Lamb placed fourth at 285 pounds. Senior Rodney Cham- berlain fi nished seventh at 138 pounds and junior Gage Herbert fi nished seventh at 152 pounds. “This is probably the toughest tournament we’ll face all year,” said Head Coach Kyle Temple. The tournament featured teams from 6A and 5A schools from around the state. And for Cottage Grove to fi nish sixth out of 36 teams is an impressive fi nish. The Lions placed fairly highly in the state fi nals last year, and it is not a stretch to think they can’t fi nish the job this year. “Some of the kids that we faced at this tournament, such as Marshfi eld, are prob- ably dominant by the time we get to the state fi nals,” said Temple. The head coach has been pleased with the way his team has been performing throughout the season and is eager to see what more of the younger wrestlers can do on the mat.
