6A COTTAGE GROVE SENTINEL December 16, 2015 Marine Corps's Toys for Tots foundation serves large numbers of families in need Less fortunate families can still have a Merry Christmas BY SAM WRIGHT The Cottage Grove Sentinel The South Lane County Fire and Rescue Department in Cot- tage Grove hosted the annual Toys for Tots event, a program run through the Marine Corps. The event takes donated toys for lower income families to be able to provide their children with gifts for the holidays. This year, the program served 387 different children coming from 180 different families around Lane County. The program also benefi ted 47 children from the Family Relief Nursery. Eager parents lined up and fi lled large bags with toys and left look- ing like Santa Claus himself on Sunday. One benefi ciary, who wished not to be named, said that she is extremely grateful for the community’s efforts to help her family and others like it: “I feel really blessed that they do this, everyone wants to be able to provide their children with a great Christmas every year.” Toys for Tots is helped by many local volunteers. When asked what brought him to the event, he said: “We’re Marines, this program is run through the Marines, and this is what we do.” The Marines and the Toys for Tots program will continue to provide for families around Lane County and Oregon. Children are not allowed in the gym during giveaway. These are gifts for families in need during the holidays. Everyone who attended the Lorane Grange Christmas din- ner on Sunday had a wonderful time while enjoying good com- pany and a delicious meal. Remember, school will be out after Friday, Dec. 18 for two weeks. Watch the roads for those riding or walking along them. For animal and pet lovers, a Tree of Joy has been set up in the Cottage Grove Veterinary Clinic, 1221 E. Main St., by the Humane Society of Cottage Grove. There are many needs for local animals and their pet owners in the community, and tags are for those who are able to take a tag and fulfi ll a wish, such as dog or cat food, treats, blankets, even a gift member- ship to the Humane Society.
