2B COTTAGE GROVE SENTINEL December 16, 2015 BOYS CONTINUED FROM PG 1B Though throughout the entire game, it was unclear who would eventually break away and take the lead. Cottage Grove held a slight lead of 22-17 at the half, but Stayton managed to tie it up at 36 going into the fourth quarter. By the end of regula- tion, the Lions still couldn’t pull away from the scrappy Eagles. It took a four-minute overtime and a few clutch plays by Gip- son and Sentman that put the Lions in front in the fi nal min- ute. Students in the audience initially tried to storm the court but were politely dissuaded by Athletic Director Gary Roberts. Head Coach Donn Pollard was extremely pleased with the way his team fi nished the game. “We have to get better at shooting from the line,” Pollard said, “but I’m really glad our guys reacted well when their backs were against the wall.” The Lions will go into prac- tice working on their free throw accuracy for their two games this week against North Bend and Siuslaw. $11 Haircuts Courtesy photo CGHS alumnus wins logging event Brian Spindler, CGHS class of 2013, won the “hard hit” event at OSU College of Forestry’s Fall Frost logging sports event Saturday, Nov. 14, at Cronemiller Lake north of Corvallis. The objective is to chop through with the fewest number of hits in less than 3 minutes. Spindler is a junior in forest engineering at OSU. It was his fi rst time competing in this event. The fi nal event was the 400 meter freestyle relay, which featured Witt, Edelb- ute, Phillips and Rudicel, who yet again took fi rst place in 4:50.74. The boys’ team wasn’t as con- sistent in taking fi rst or second place in order to earn them the most points, but their swim- ming was impressive nonethe- less. The aforementioned time of the boys' group was less than a second off of the fi rst place Churchill time of 2:48.29. Chambers and Ethan Burleson did take fi rst and second place in the 200 meter freestyle with times of 2:15.13 and 2:16.72 respectively. Dukes faced off three opposing Churchill swim- mers in the 100 meter breast stroke and came out on top with a time of 1:12. But since the other three racers took second, third and fourth place, the Lions were only awarded six points and Churchill was award nine. Head Coach Tyson Pilling seemed extremely pleased once again with the performances of all of his swimmers. “I was really impressed with the girls, and the boys are see- ing a lot of improvement,” he said. The boys' loss was not a bother nor much of a concern for Pilling, as he noted the prog- ress they are making and many already having the ability to win races. “We’re just trying to have fun and get better every day; that’s what these meets are all about,” he added. The Lions hosted another meet on Tuesday which will be covered in next week’s paper. Stayton had more points off of turnovers (34) than Cot- tage Grove had points overall. Also, Stayton took 30 shots from the free-throw line (making 18). The Lions yet again won the re- bound battle (43-37), but Yoss suggests that the rebound game is still a problem. “I’m still trying to fi gure out who is best in what position,” Yoss said of his teams’ strug- gles. “We also have been miss- ing Hannah Arnold for the past few games, and that doesn’t help us.” Arnold has been out with a concussion for these past three games. She is expected to return within the week, however. The Lions continue their hunt for a win against North Bend and Siuslaw this week.
