2A COTTAGE GROVE SENTINEL December 2, 2015 IN MEMORIAM Jacqueline Hurd 1938-2015 Jacqueline “Jill” Hurd, 77, of Drain, Ore. passed away Nov. 23, 2015. She was born May 16, 1938 in Salem, Ore. to Frank and Martha (Steur) Ev- ans. In 1956, she gradu- ated from Drain High School. Jill worked as a secretary and in the education service depart- ment in Roseburg. She enjoyed rock hounding, hunting for arrowheads and dig- ging for bottles. Survivors include a twin brother, Jack Evans of Cottage Grove, a daughter, Helen Tem- pleton and husband, Mike, of Yoncalla, three sons, Jerry Ray of Yoncalla, Jack Hurd of Cot- tage Grove and Frank Hurd and wife, Tiffaney, of Yoncalla, nine grandchildren and 21 great- grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Richard Evans, and a grandson, Steven Gordon. A memorial service followed by a reception will be held Sat- urday, Dec. 5 at 2 p.m. at the Drain Church of Christ. Burial will be at Drain Cemetery. Arrangements under the care of Smith-Lund-Mills Funeral Chapel, Cottage Grove. James A. Nelson 1946-2015 James “Jim” A. Nelson, 69, of Drain p a s s e d away Nov. 26, 2015 from a BIRTHS Nov. 20, 2015 daughter. To Cheri and Devon Allen of Creswell, a daughter. Nov. 25, 2015 To Kayla Summers and Miles Worthington of Cottage Grove, a son. Nov. 21, 2015 To Lindsey and Wayne Roberts of Creswell, a daughter. Jim (Papa) would do it. Survivors include his wife of Drain, four stepsons, Don- nie (Cindy) Morgan, Mitchell (Anette) Morgan, and Eddie (Autumn) Stere all of Cottage Grove and Gary Morgan of Eu- gene, two stepdaughters, Kathy (Ted) Morrison and Tammie (Chris) Poe, two siblings, Lorin- da (Rick) Gauthier and Barbara (Bob) Stevenson, 18 grandchil- dren, fi ve great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild. He was preceded in death by his parents and a daughter, Cori Nelson. A Celebration of Life will be held Dec. 5 at 4 p.m. at Cottage Grove Bible Church, 1200 E. Quincy. Nov. 22, 2015 stroke. He was born Aug. 4, 1946 in Cottage Grove to James and Mable Nelson. He was raised in the Hayhurst area near Drain and attended high school. On June 13, 1992 in Cottage Grove, he and Jeanette Murphy were married. Jim served in the Navy in Vietnam. He worked as a log truck driver for Barns Trucking and Looney Trucking. Reading God’s word was his greatest pleasure. He was an ac- complished wood worker and made beautiful pieces, giving them to family and friends. He loved to spoil his grandkids and take his wife Jeanette and dog, Daisy May, to the coast where he fi shed, clammed and walked on the beach. He also enjoyed hunting and photography. Sincerely, The Florez Family Ricardo, Meg, Xavier, Ben and Rhea JOANN BUTLER 1947-2015 Joann Butler (née Strawn) died peacefully at home on November 26, 2015 in Cottage Grove, Oregon at the age of 68 of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclero- sis (also known as ALS or Lou Gehrig’s Disease). Joann is survived by her husband of 51 years, Charles; father, Glen Strawn of Idabel, OK; children, Glen Butler of Eugene, David Butler of Portland, and Teresa Gray of Springfi eld, Oregon; siblings, Wynell Wheeler of Idabel, OK, Bonnie Ellis of Creswell, OR, Sue Bailey of Cottage Grove, OR, and Kay Dennis of Anchorage, AK. She is also sur- vived by her 8 grandchildren; Gabby, Nate, Katie, Calvin, Mad- eleine, Riley, Austin, and Ryan. Her daughter, Titta Lee; her moth- er, Helen Strawn; and her brother, Ike Williams, precede her in death. Joann was born on January 6, 1947 in Idabel, OK. Her moth- er, Helen, and her father, Glen Strawn, raised her. She married Charles in 1964. Shortly aft er getting married in Oklahoma, the couple moved to Cottage Grove where they made their home and raised their children. Joann began working for AOK Janitorial in 1987 and loved her job. She enjoyed bowling, playing bingo, dot- ing on her grandchildren, knitting, and traveling to warm loca- tions. Aft er being diagnosed with ALS, she became dedicated to fundraising for the ALS Association. She remained a brave, iron- willed woman, even throughout her fi nal months. A memorial service is scheduled for 10am on December 5, 2015 at Smith Lund Mills in Cottage Grove, with a reception the same day from 2-5pm at Riverstone Mobile Home Park’s Recre- ation Center located at 77500 S. 6 th Street in Cottage Grove. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Joann’s life. Public visitation will be held at Smith Lund Mills on Friday, December 4 th from 6-8pm.
