It makes it a challenge, but it’s also why I enjoy it so much. Since mid-September I have pursued whitetails. Some afternoons, even the squirrels were scarce, but on others, 20 deer went by before darkness ended the hunting day. What amazes me is how many white- tails show up like clockwork, while others appear from no- where at the least likely times. I shot a few does for the freez- er, but took home much more than venison this season. I saw spectacular sunsets, heard owls MISTY and crows calling, and admired male cardinals perched in near- by trees. I felt the chilling wind, stinging rain, and warm sun. These are the things that make it rewarding. Get outside and keep your eyes open—you never know when you’ll encounter the unexpected. Stay Warm in Your Deer Stand In order to sit still among prime deer cover, a hunter must take extra steps to stay warm for the entire day. It’s a good idea to bring extra layers in a daypack along with snacks and a small thermos fi lled with the hot liq- uid of your choice. A solid base layer system of polypropylene or Thermax long underwear is essential. Don’t forget to pack a quality hat; much of your body heat can escape through your head. Keep in mind that some hunters head back to camp around mid-morn- ing or noon because they are cold or hungry. In the process, they may push deer your way. If you can avoid the temptation to get up and move to stay warm, you might be in the right spot at the right time. Choose the Right Sporting Clays Shotgun Thinking about busting some clays at your local range but don’t know where to start? The fi rst step is determining if you want to pursue sporting clays as a hobby or if you’re approach- ing it as hunting practice. Then you’ll want to select a gun to match. If you’re shooting clays as a hobby of its own, you should use a sporting clays gun. Serious clay shooters arm them- selves with specially designed shotguns—complete with port- ed barrels, optimized stock con- fi gurations and other features. Hunters looking to polish their waterfowl or upland abilities will want to shoot sporting clays with the shotgun they plan to use in the fi eld. This will allow you to simulate hunting situations while becoming more comfort- able with your gun. Ultimately, you have to decide which is more important, high scores at the range or a limit in the fi eld.
