COTTAGE GROVE SENTINEL November 4, 2015 CHAMBER NEWSLETTER CHAMBER NEWS Note from the Director Giving thanks is something that we can and should do all year long but thankfully, (no pun intended) we have holidays to remind us about what we may have forgotten. In this Thanksgiving Season, we have many things to remind us of just how lucky we are. For Veterans Day on November 11th we and many others will close our offi ces to recognize the men and women who have served our country. We at the Chamber also want to thank the many businesses in town who choose to recognize and honor our veterans, each in their own way. We are also thankful for the many businesses and organizations that collaborate or participate in the many events that take place in Cottage Grove each year. Despite the threat of foul weather, we enjoyed a fantastic afternoon of Trick or Treating on Main Street. To kick off the holiday shopping season and remind people about the impact of shopping local, the Chamber and the Main Street Program are working together on promoting “Small Business Saturday” and fi nally, “Christmas in Cottage Grove” on December 5th is yet another event that will bring people to town, rain or shine, to celebrate in the merriment of the upcoming holidays. None of these events would be possible if not for the numerous businesses and organizations that that choose to participate in their own way. No organization can supply the resources to do it all but when each business, club, church and committee come together for the common goal of promoting Cottage Grove, we suddenly end up with the ability to showcase our community and all of our wonderful amenities to audiences that otherwise wouldn’t know what we have to offer. So again, in this season of giving thanks, the Chamber would like to express our sincere gratitude to our members, supporters, sponsors, and volunteers. You make a difference in more ways than you could possibly know and your support has contributed to the continued success of our local economy. In the fall and especially in Cottage Grove, the leaves can start coming down off the trees pretty fast. If the sidewalk in front of your business starts collecting leaves, be sure to sweep or blow them off as quickly and as often as possible. Leaves hide bumps and cracks in the sidewalk that may cause a person to have a serious fall. They can also get very slippery when they accumulate even a small amount of moisture. It only takes a few minutes and removing leaves and other debris from areas where people walk by your business not only prevents injury and potential lawsuits, but it also makes your business look good and is more inviting to potential customers. Thank you for participating in chamber membership, by doing so you are also participating in the economic growth and development of the Cottage Grove community. After all, when you own a local business where are you generally doing business? Locally, right? When asked to name our favorite restaurant, café, or shop, it is typically a unique Cottage Grove shop with personal appeal. Our town is loaded with these types of businesses. The challenge is that these local merchants rely on our business. Without us as shoppers they could close their doors. The Cottage Grove Area Chamber of Commerce would like you to consider redirecting some of your spending this holiday season. When local shoppers spend $100 in Cottage Grove, $45 of that revenue actually goes back into the local economy, in the form of wages, rents, and materials. If we spend that same $100 in Eugene little to none will come back to Cottage Grove. So let’s “Think Local” this holiday season - There is literally something for every shopper at our local businesses. In one day of shopping you can support a myriad of businesses and meet the goal of your shopping needs. The day after Thanksgiving is the biggest shopping day of the year. We encourage you to “Think Local” and shop Cottage Grove for all your holiday needs! “Think Local Shop Cottage Grove” The Gift Certifi cate Program is a Member Benefi t Highlight As a chamber we strive to educate the community of the value of supporting our local merchants. The Gift Certifi cate program is one way we encourage shopping local. Purpose: 1. Promote shopping at CG Chamber Member businesses. 2. Support chamber members with dollars spent in Cottage Grove. Plans are under way for this year’s Downtown Christmas Tree Lighting which will be held on Saturday, December 5th. Bundle up and join us for some family fun! To kick of the day, have breakfast with Santa at the Fire Station, take advantage of various merchant discounts, participate in a scavenger hunt, have your picture taken with Santa after the tree lighting ceremony, tour Dr. Snapp’s House on River Road and fi nd that special gift for someone on your shopping list at their annual bazaar. What a great way to start the Christmas season! Watch for a schedule of all the events in the coming months. Save the Date! Chamber Annual Awards Banquet – January 16 Mark your calendars and plan to attend our 66th Annual Awards banquet. The Chamber Banquet is a time to recognize those in our community who truly stand out through volunteerism and excellent business practices. It is also an opportunity to recognize student excellence and teacher appreciation among other recognitions. This year our banquet will held on January 16, 2016. Save the date on your calendar and look for details in the coming months. And don’t forget to submit your nomination for First Citizen or Business of the Year!
