Mae Marie (Malcolm) Westfall Cook 1932-2015 Mae Marie (Malcolm) Westfall Cook, 83, of Cottage Grove, Oregon passed away peacefully Oct. 13, 2015 from complications of heart disease. Her children were at her bed side. She was born June 15, 1932 in Bellingham, WA to Percy and Marie Malcolm. Mae grew up in Cottage Grove and was a graduate of Cottage Grove High School in 1950. She was Salutatorian of her class and received the American Legion Outstanding Girl award that same year. She also attended the University of Oregon later in life. In 1950 she married Kenneth Edwin Westfall. Th ey raised four children together before his drowning death in a boating accident in 1973 in British Columbia, Canada. Mae loved life, laughter, family and friends and she lived it to its fullest. She even named her last dog “Happy.” When it got out of the fenced yard Mae’s sons had to run around the neighborhood yelling “Happy!” to get the dog to return. Mae was active in numerous community and civic organizations and in 1977 was honored as the Lane County Woman of the Year for her many community service activities, including heading up a successful fund raising campaign for the Cottage Grove Hospital’s Intensive Care Unit. In addition to serving on the budget committee for the South Lane School District and the Cottage Grove Planning Commission she also served on the Lane County board for the American Red Cross. At the University of Oregon she was chairman of the Rental Sales Gallery for the Museum of Art. She also served on the board of governors for the friends of the museum at the University. She remained a huge fan of both major Oregon football teams as the Mother of graduates from both UO and OSU. Mae ran for Congress in the mid-70s and was thrilled to be able to have lunch with President Reagan with a group of new candidates at that time. Mae was an active homemaker who also worked outside the home while raising her four children and teaching them to love the fruits of hard work as well. Mae was also known as a gourmet cook and her recipes have become a family legacy. She raised her family always actively participating and serving in her local church and conveyed her faith in the Lord to her children crediting her deep relationship and trust in God with her optimistic outlook. She has lived all over the Western US and Canada and has traveled throughout the United States, Canada and Europe sharing her sunny disposition. In her busy joy fi lled life Mae always found time for others and for pursuing new adventures and activities. She even was selected as a nationally broadcast game show participant hosted by Monty Hall back in the 60s because of her vibrant fun-loving personality. She won thousands of dollars in prizes including a year’s supply of TV dinners (much to the chagrin of her family so accustomed to her great cooking). Mae was a local champion at Curling in Canada and played soft ball and golfed while cheering on her family’s many sporting activities. Mae’s philosophy was captured beautifully in a 1976 full page article about her in the Cottage Grove Sentinel which quoted her saying, “I feel you have to live each day as it comes and make it a joy. Sometimes you have to make the joy and laughter yourself. We all have to work at life to make it happy, but true happiness comes from within. Life has been good to me and I feel it is my responsibility to live life at its best.” Because of her radiant love, insightful wisdom and happy spirit Mae has positively impacted many lives. She will be missed dearly by all who knew her though her love of life lives on in the hearts of those whose lives she touched. Aft er the death of her fi rst husband, Mae married Robert Ernest Cook, also of Cottage Grove, OR in 1985 and their love thrived until his death in 2002.
