IN MEMORIAM Rodney LeRoy Nyleen 1931-2015 Rodney “Rod” LeRoy Nyleen, 84, of Cottage Grove passed away Sept. 25, 2015 from pneu- monia. He was born May 27, 1931 in Clearbrook, Minn. to Paul M. and Emelia (Kihlstadi- us) Nyleen. He re- ceived a Bachelor’s Degree in Sociology from Wil- lamette University. He served in the US Navy in aviation and as a machinist’s mate second class. In Burns, Oregon, he was part owner and operator of a retail store. Rod owned and fl ew his own plane. He loved to hunt and fi sh with his brothers and other fam- ily members. He also loved to golf and play “Pitch” (a card game) after golfi ng. Rod was a member and twice Past Exalted Ruler at the Burn’s Elk Lodge. He is survived by a brother, Clifton Nyleen of Sutherlin, Ore. A Celebration of Life will be held Friday, Oct. 16 at 1 p.m. at Smith-Lund-Mills Funeral Cha- pel in Cottage Grove. Gladys Lorine (Messer) Barrow 1927-2015 Gladys Lorine (Messer) Bar- row, 88, of Salem, Ore. passed away Oct. 5, 2015. Gladys was born July 28, 1927 in Staples, Minn. to Wil- liam Aaron Messer and Dora Sophie (Gaumitz) Messer. She grad- uated from high school in 1945. In 1956 in California, Gladys and Harold Francis Barrow were married. Gladys worked as a secretary and offi ce manager at the Clack- amas County Assessors Offi ce, where she retired. Her hobbies included family, gardening, golfi ng and camp- ing in her RV during the winter months. She is survived by a daughter, Judy A. Dowell of Salem, Ore., and a son, Scott A. Barrow of Seattle, Wash., two grandchil- dren and one great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold Bar- row, parents, William and Dora Messer, and 10 brothers and sis- ters. A private family memorial will be held at a later date. Ar- rangements under the care of Sunset Hills Cemetery, Funeral Home and Crematorium, Eu- gene. Ruth Viola Apana 1923-2015 Ruth Viola Apana, 92, passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family on Oct. 1, 2015. Ruth was born in Sweet Home, Or- egon to Lily Viola Smith and Clar- ence Davis. She grew up near Cot- tage Grove and gradu- ated from Cottage Grove High School and then relocated to San Francisco, California, where she spent the rest of her life. In 1944 in Vancouver, Wash., Ruth and Herbert Lau Apana, who was from Maui, Hawaii, were married. They had wanted to get married in San Francisco, but due to laws of interracial marriage at the time, were not able to. Ruth worked as one of the fa- mous Rosie the Riveters and lat- er for the Folgers Coffee family, and eventually retired from the US Post Offi ce after 25 years. Ruth maintained her family ties to Oregon by bringing all three of her children, Karen, Steve and Julie, to Cottage Grove in the summer to live with their grandmother. Ruth continued to stay in touch with her child- hood friends in Cottage Grove and even subscribed to the Cot- tage Grove Sentinel. Ruth was a unique, kind and generous spirit and will be dearly missed. Georgia “Pete” Mae Rychard Georgia “Pete” Mae Rychard, 86 of Cottage Grove, Oregon passed away on Thursday, October 8, 2015. She was born on September 11, 1929 in Yoncalla, Oregon to Chester and Edna (Meyers) Miller. Georgia graduated from Yoncalla High School in 1947. On October 17, 1947, she married Quentin Rychard. Georgia volunteered at the Yoncalla Rodeo for 40 plus years, the Senior Meals on Wheels for 18 plus years, beds for the freezing nights, and numerous other community foods programs. Her hobbies included gardening, line dancing, sewing, card making, spending time with family, and baking her famous apple pies. She was Grand Marshall for the Yoncalla Summer Festival parade and on Bohemia Mining Days court. Georgia is preceded in death by her husband, Quentin and son, Stan. She is survived by her daughter Rhonda Rasmussen and husband Mike of Drain, Oregon, and three grandchildren, David Rychard and wife Tonya of Harrisburg, Oregon, Carla Shaw and husband Don of Drain, Oregon, and Melissa Quimby and husband Christian of Cottage Grove, Oregon. There will be a visitation on Tuesday October 13, 2015 from 6:00pm to 8:00 pm at Smith Lund Mills Funeral Chapel in Cottage Grove, Oregon. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday October 15, 2015 at 11:00 am at the Yoncalla Christian Assembly in Yoncalla, Oregon. A potluck reception for family and friends will be immediately following the service at the Yoncalla Community Center. Private family graveside service will be at the Yoncalla Pioneer Cemetery. Please bring your favorite memory written on a piece of paper to be added to the “Memory Jar”, to be shared later with the family. Her three children, fi ve grand- children, and two great-grand- children survive Ruth. Ruth was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and brothers, Richard Davis (San Diego, Calif.) and Earl Davis (Eugene, Oregon). Ruth’s Celebration of Life will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 21at Duggan’s-Serra Mortuary 500 West Lake, Daly City, Calif. Funeral Mass at Mission Dolo- res Basilica on Thursday, Oct. 22 at 11 a.m. in San Francisco, Calif. Ruth loved all animals, so in lieu of fl owers, the family is requesting donations to an ani- mal shelter of your choice. Crow Middle School students have been working on their amazing U.S. History mural that will be placed in the library when they fi nish. Pictures that I have seen are quite impressive — it’s a truly historical depic- tion. Those having ordered “Groundwater 2015: An Anthol- ogy” may pick up their pre-or- dered copies when Pat Edwards and staff host a distribution at Songbrook Community Cen- ter, located at 4055 Royal Ave. in Eugene, on Monday, Oct. 19 from 4:30-6 p.m. A free ukulele lesson club for all fourth through twelfth-grade CAL students will begin Thurs- day, Oct. 15 and take place every Thursday from 3:30-5 p.m. The fi rst concert performance is the night of the Rural Arts Center dinner and movie in December at Lorane Grange. Crow Booster Club hopes you will attend their annual Sports- man Auction in the Crow High School gym on Saturday, Oct 24. The silent auction will be at 5 p.m., at 6 p.m. a fantastic bar- becue dinner will be served, with the live auction at 7 p.m. There are items to bid on from the el- ementary classes and amazing baskets for bidding from the Middle and high school classes.
