They affect our words, moods, attitudes, the choices we make, and even our relationship with God and others. They also affect our emotional and physi- cal health. In fact, research shows that 75 to 98 percent of mental, physical, and behavioral illness comes from one’s thought life. The mind and body are defi nite- ly connected! For instance, did you know you can stress yourself out by the way you think? So often, we believe our circumstances are to blame for our unhappiness, however it’s the way we think about our circumstances that usually causes worry and stress. Stress is a modern-day epi- demic. And that’s only a few of the symptoms! The good news is God has given us the answer for worry and stress. What’s his prescrip- tion? Trust. Proverbs 3:5 (AMP) says, “Lean on, trust in, and be confi dent in the Lord with all your heart and mind and do not rely on your own insight or un- derstanding.” Trusting God is the greatest stress reliever in the world, and our minds play an important role in the process. She attended country school in Brookings County and graduated from Volga High School in 1938. On May 3, 1941, she married Lyle W Eggebraaten. Together they raised three children - Sheila, Linda and Gale. Velma was a talented seamstress and enjoyed designing and sewing for the family including coats, costumes, an elaborate formal and draperies. Velma & Lyle were wonderful dancers and a highlight was winning a dance contest at the Corn Palace in Mitchell, SD. After the family moved to California in 1958, she, along with Lyle, became avid bowlers. That continued after they moved to Cottage Grove, OR in 1975 and worked together at The Bowling Green. She loved having friends and family stop in anytime for a game of dominoes or Yahtzee. Another hobby was crocheting, including afghans and making “bed dolls” for the family - over 20 in all and each one different. Lyle passed away in 1985 and in 1999 she moved to Medford OR to be closer to family. She lived 15 years at Anna Maria Retirement Center where she was well known for delivering birthday and get-well cards to the other residents. She was a regular at the weekly Bingo games and several people remember enjoying watching her toes tapping under the table when there was musical entertainment. In June, 2015, needing some personal assistance, she moved to Northridge Assisted Living. Her time there was short but residents again commented about how much they enjoyed her. She was really a people person.
