PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH HAPPENINGS After serving 15 months as interim pastor at First Presbyterian Church, Bruce Cameron retired and last Sunday they welcomed their new permanent pastor, Reverend Karen Hill. FPC Worship service begins at 10 a.m. followed by a coffee time in the Friendship Hall. The church is located at 216 S. Third St. Oct. 4: World Communion Sunday - A worldwide celebration of unity among multiple denominations. Oct. 19: Taize Service resumes in the church chapel from 6:30-7:30 p.m. (Use the west entrance on Third St.) Oct. 25: Reformation Sunday – A celebration of Protestantism starting with Martin Luther’s publish- ing the 95 theses as a protest against the Catholic Church and the beginnings of the Presbyterian Church in Scotland. METHODIST HARVEST PARTY AT SHADY OAKS – Sunday, Oct. 18 from 3-5 p.m. Those interested in meeting local Methodists in a fun, informal setting are invited to join them for the church’s annual Harvest Party at Shady Oaks on Hwy 99. Sit around the campfi re to roast hot dogs and marshmallows and join in a sing-along time, take a hay ride out to the pumpkin patch and enjoy this family-friendly event. New Methodist pastor pleased with new church and community BY CINDY WEELDREYER Sentinel Faith Page Editor I n her freshman year of college, Lura Kid- ner-Miesen knew she wanted to spend the rest of her life in Christian ministry. Born in Rapid City, SD, she was a baby when her fami- ly moved to Idaho. Growing up in small towns, Kidner-Miesen felt comfortable serving rural United Methodist churches, fi rst in Idaho and then in Oregon. A 1975 graduate of Shoshone High School in Southern Idaho, she attended Boise State University and graduated four years later with a degree in history and english. There she met Neal Miesen, and in 1980 they married. Neal joined the U.S. Army and Lura followed him to Fort Carson, Colo. While there she attended Iliff School of Theology in Denver and graduat- ed in 1983 to become a United Methodist min- ister. The couple has two adult children now, a daughter in Corvallis and a son in Boise. For 15 years she served several small town churches in Idaho before moving to Oregon. She spent fi ve years in Eastern Oregon in Bak- er City and then 12 years in Stayton (east of Salem). “As a teen, I felt called to do something in the church after participating in a workshop that highlighted church job opportunities,” Kidner-Miesen said. “As a freshman in college I felt God’s call to be a pastor and began the long process of confi rming that call within the United Methodist Church (UMC). It’s been a wonderful life for me and my family.” A self-described extrovert who loves people, she enjoys serving others and reminding them of how much Christ loves them and how God has a purpose for each life. She sees her pur- pose in life to provide hope to those who need it and to encourage people to grow in their love of God and others. In her Bible study class she encourages people to share their experiences with others who are at different stages on their spiritual journey. She enjoys making a positive dif- ference in the lives of those who seek her coun- sel and watching how they grow spiritually. “I have a very supportive husband and to- gether we’ve raised two terrifi c kids,” she said. “My work has never been just a job; I’ve always appreciated the good fi t between my profes- sional life and my family life. I’ve been blessed that my family and my work complement each other, which creates wholeness in my life.” Kidner-Miesen’s challenges have been simi- lar to all Christian pastors seeking to make an- cient scriptures relevant in the growing secular culture of America. “My ongoing challenge is how do I success- fully adapt to bring the Good News of Christ and the love of God to a church that is aging? In Western culture, Christians generally show their faith in actions; and when I fi rst began my ministry that was enough. I did many good things in a loving way so others would know I’m a Christian by my actions. Today, I’m learning to verbalize how my actions refl ect my spirituality. It is also important to listen for the needs within the local congregation and com- munity and work together to address them.” After serving the UMC church in Stayton for a dozen years, Kidner-Miesen is happy she has the opportunity to enjoy another new beginning in her newest small town. She has spent the past two-and-a-half months getting to know the local Methodists and the Cottage Grove com- munity. Her fi rst impression of “The Grove” came as a surprise. She says she is amazed by how much has been accomplished thanks to many dedicated and hard-working volunteers: “It surprises me, for a town this size, how many activities and programs it has to help people.” “I’m not coming in with a pre-planned vi- sion,” she said. “In my short time here I’ve learned this church is a welcoming church for people of varied backgrounds and experiences. I see a real opportunity to reach out to empty- nesters and retired individuals. As a newcomer to this community, I look forward to fi nding friends, discovering ways to make a positive difference and continuing to grow spiritually.” Church Council Chair Marlene Leith said members are pleased with the new pastor both personally and professionally and with how willing she is to get involved in her new town. “Lura’s sermons are well-thought out and based in Scripture. AWANA CLUB MEETINGS - Wednesdays 6:30 - 8:30 p.m. AWANA is a weekly Christian education program for ages three through high school.
