COTTAGE GROVE SENTINEL September 23, 2015 Cottage Grove Retrospective CLIP N' CARRY GARAGE SALES A look back at Sentinel stories from 30 and 40 years ago Sept. 25, 1985 Dorena Grange celebrates its 50th birthday Sept. 25, 1975 Lions top Millers in see- saw match Last Sunday Afternoon marked the 50th anniversary celebration of the Dorena Grange, an event attended by over 80 members and visitors, according to grange lecturer Alpha Pitcher. Included in the program was the presentation of guests and char- ter members, a musical program by Tom and Debbie Trammel, a piano solo by Marvel McConnell, a guest speech by Allen Wheeler and a time capsule ceremony. Charter members Mildred Bonkowski, Thelma Campbell and Avanelle Wicks were honored for their 50 years of membership with grange pins. Past masters of the grange were also honored and a community service report was fi led by Helen Millar. Herbert Collins delivered a building committee report and an agriculture report was given by Lillie Hemenway. Caroline Sessions reviewed work by the Com- mittee of Women's Activists. Present Grand Master Frank Sessions opened the program by welcoming guests and visitors while Alpha Pitcher gave a lecturer's report. "I think it went real well," said Pitcher. "We were real pleased with the crowd and the music was excellent." Mark Sizemore dodged this Spring- fi eld defender and sever others off a 57-yard intercep- tion return in last Friday's game. The return positoned the Lions inside the 10- yard line. POLICE BLOTTER Sept. 14 Shots Fired, N River Rd/Grimes Rd A caller reported laying along the riverbank adjacent to location and that there is someone shooting a gun at him; the caller could not see anyone but has heard approximately fi ve shots. Sept. 16 Suicide Attempt, Butter Cup Lp Multiple callers advised that a woman stated she took an unknown amount of pills and wanted to kill Cottage Grove Police Department 24-Hour Anonymous Tip Line: 767-0504 herself. An Attempt To Locate was given to Lane County Sheriff’s Of- fi ce and Oregon State Police. Offi - cers spoke with the nephew of the subject and advised that she is men- tally ill and she began screaming at him and her cats for no apparent reason. The subject takes numerous medications. Drug Info, S 8th St. A caller advised three juveniles were in their school offi ce under the infl uence of marijuana. All of the subjects were cited for a minor in possession of marijuana and re- leased to school staff on scene. Intoxicated Subject, E Main St. Safeway Police got a 911 call from a fe- male subject that fell down in the parking lot and was possibly in- jured. A second call from the fi re commission advised that the woman was highly intoxicated and refusing treatment near the Pink House. The subject was transferred to the police department and later released to her husband. Bike Theft, W Main St. A caller reported that his bicycle was stolen and it could have oc- curred within the last week. The bike is a specialized stunt jumper worth approximately $800. 5A Suicidal Subject, Bryson Sears Rd. Caller advised that his girlfriend was sending him suicidal text mes- sages. He was then transferred to the Lane County Sheriff’s Offi ce. Missing Person Located, Gowdyville A missing person was located on Gowdyville. Medics were routed as the subject took approximately 90 hydrocodone and 10-20 muscle relaxers. Operator was advised of the outcome and her vehicle was se- cured on scene. HILLTOP SALE! Franie Brin- dle, Area Manager, and Kevin Finch, Maintenance Manager, also attended. In addition to meeting the new District Man- ager they discussed projects and operations on the state right of ways. Youth Advisory Council After taking a break during July and August it is time to re- start the Youth Advisory Coun- cil. Any youth from 8th grade through High School age are in- vited to participate. The YAC was created in 2004 by the City of Cottage Grove to provide an opportunity for the youth of the community to par- ticipate and voice their concerns regarding local issues and chal- lenges. The City looks to the Youth Advisory Council as the primary communication link between local government and youth on a variety of subjects and opportunities. In addition, members of the YAC serve as a Youth Representative at City Council meetings. The Youth Representative gets to partici- pate as a member of the City Council to discuss and vote on City issues. The YAC meets regularly to discuss community issues and develop ideas for projects or activities to benefi t youth, carries out the projects and activities and visit with oth- er community leaders. Applications for the YAC will be available online and at City Hall next week, and they are due for submission by Nov. 2. Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator Over the past several weeks, Public Works has been review- ing resumes and conducting in- terviews for a Wastewater Treat- ment Plant Operator. The City received a total of 13 Applications, and interviews were conducted with fi ve fi nal- ists. He has an Associate of Arts degree in Water/Wastewater Technology from Linn-Benton Community College and currently holds an Oregon Wastewater Treatment Grade II classifi cation. Stakeholder Meeting On Wednesday of this week, Public Works Director Jan Well- man attended the Lane County Waste Management Stakeholder meeting at Lane County Public Works in Eugene. The meeting was attended by approximately 30 waste haulers, recycle orga- nizations, and cities through- out the county. LCWM staff discussed general operations, landfi ll issues, tipping fees, and recycling goals. Representa- tives from Oregon DEQ were on-hand to present the very ambitious solid waste diversion goals and objectives. Digester Basins Cleaned Both digester basins at the Wastewater Treatment Plant have been drained and cleaned. This activity is performed every 4-5 years and improves the func- tioning of the digester basins. The digester basins collect grit and sludge on the bottom of the basins, underneath the bubble diffusers. This material needs to be washed out from under the bubble diffusers, vacuumed into a tanker truck, and trans- ported to an approved disposal facility. The two digester basins are drained and cleaned one at a time. The material is aggres- sively pressed and the level of each basin is taken down to expose the remaining grit and sludge. Once this material is re- moved, the basin is placed back in service and the process is re- peated for the other digester ba- sin. The City says digester ba- sins will not need to be cleaned again until 2020. Asset Mapping Forum The community is welcome to an Asset Mapping Forum on Tuesday, Sept. 29 from 6-8 p.m. at the Cottage Grove Com- munity Center. The purpose of this forum is to hear from com- munity organizations and indi- viduals regarding the services and supports currently provided for children and families in the community by your organiza- tions, churches, community groups, etc. The 90x30 Initia- tive www.90by30.uoregon.edu is sponsoring the event and in- viting all interested members of the community to attend. The group has specifi c questions it will be asking to gather infor- mation.
