Speed display
trailer
Street sweeper
repair
Maintenance staff at the City
Shop have been servicing the
speed display trailer. Several
months ago the trailer had been
serviced and new batteries had
been installed but the perfor-
mance of the trailer was very
poor and the batteries would run
down in just a few hours. Staff
checked out the trailer for obvi-
ous electrical problems and re-
placed the batteries again with a
different brand.
(The City says it had stopped
using the previous brand of bat-
teries because of poor perfor-
mance in other equipment).
Residents may have noticed
that the City’s street sweeper
has not been sweeping the
streets for the past few weeks,
and the City says this is because
the auxiliary engine that powers
the sweeper’s brooms and other
mechanical functions developed
a coolant leak and needed to be
repaired. The repair was com-
pleted in-house and the sweeper
should be back on the streets by
next week. Public Works allo-
cated funds in the Fiscal Year
2015-2016 budget to replace
the current 2007 Elgin street
sweeper. Once the new sweeper
is ordered, delivery of the new
unit will occur within three to
four months.

began to shovel dirt into the pit.
At fi rst the donkey cried
out, obviously terrifi ed of his
situation. Later his owner no-
ticed that he’d gotten quiet and
thought he’d probably already
died. But the donkey had not
died. When the owner looked
down in the pit, he saw that ev-
ery time dirt fell on its back, the
donkey would shake it off and
step on it, packing it down un-
der his hoofs. This continued
for hours until fi nally, the don-
key had packed the dirt enough
to lift himself up—and out of
that pit!
We can learn something from
that donkey. Life will throw dirt
on us from time to time. It may

This week, City volunteer
Don Strahan will begin mark-
ing hazards along the 13-mile
upper stretch of the Row River
Bike Path. There are numer-
ous humps, bumps, and cracks
along the upper section of the
bike path. Some of the origi-
nal hazard markings have faded
and need to be refreshed. Other
hazards have just recently ap-
peared and need to be highlight-

and maintenance responsibility
for the entire 16.5 miles of the
Trail last year via a management
agreement with the BLM.

wrong directions. “Mr. Hoppie” nosed “Albert”
by two feet to win the second place award.
The $1 fi rst prize and 50c second place awards
were donated by Short’s Plumbing.
While there were only three entries, the large
crowd of amused spectators was delighted with
the races, which should prove incentive enough
to hold a similar event sometime next summer.
Burleson’s “Ike” was winner of the frog dash
Tuesday afternoon during the fi rst annual Frog
Jumping Contest held by Pioneer Bridge.
“Albert” leaped a total of 5’6 ½”, in three hops,
to cop the fi rst prize. “Ike,” who outweighed the
two other frogs put together, put forth with a 4’3
½” effort, while “Mr. Hoppie,” tiny entry of 8-
year-old Roger Randall, gave three quick leaps
to total 3’2 ½”.
In the frog dash, “Ike” was the slowest leaper
of the bunch but ambled in a straight line to win
