COTTAGE GROVE SENTINEL July 1, 2015 Reminder: Early deadlines Hot ‘Wings and Wheels’ The Sentinel offi ce will be closed Friday, July 3 in observance of Independence Day. Early Dead- lines for classifi ed ads, display ads, legal notices and editorial submissions will be July 2 at noon. Temperatures sizzle at second-annual event Fire destroys outbuilding BY MATT HOLLANDER The Cottage Grove Sentinel T he shimmering heat waves on the tarmac of Jim Wright Field were matched only by the glistening colors of nearly 50 exquisite automobiles, aircrafts and motorcycles. The weather forecast for the weekend — up to 100 degrees in some parts of the Willamette Valley — could have kept quite a few folks from venturing out to the second annual Wings and Wheels, hosted by the Oregon Aviation Historical Society (OAHS) Saturday at the Cottage Grove Airport. But while fewer people attended than last year, there were more vehicles on display, and event organizers are confi dent that they have a winning formula. “We really like the weekend before the Fourth of July because we aren’t compet- ing with any other local events,” said Doug Kindred, President of OAHS. “The only part that can be a gamble with this time of year is the weather. Last year it was perfect, but today was pretty hot, and we think that kept some people from coming out.” Participating exhibitors were appar- ently less deterred by the hot weather. Not only were there more vehicles on display, but several owners made impromptu visits 3A photos by Matt Hollander Greg Cochran of Cottage Grove brought his 1932 Ford Vicky to the second annual WIng and Wheels event Saturday at Jim Wright Field. without registering beforehand. “For a long time we weren’t sure what we were going to get,” said Kindred. “We started reaching out to different vintage- car clubs in March, but it’s very hard to get commitments for an event that some people see as way out in the future.” Wings and Wheels is not an event exclu- sive to classic vehicles. As Kindred said, they just have to be interesting. And on Sat- urday the years of the vehicles ranged from 1928 to 2015. “It’s a great combination because auto- mobiles and aircrafts have always gone to- gether. It also brings together a great group of people who have a lot in common,” said Greg Cochran of Cottage Grove, who was showing his 1932 Ford Vicky — a vehicle that was originally built for his late father, Bob. The people’s choice awards went to a 1965 Cobra owned by Mark Armstrong and a 1941 Interstate Cadet owned by Mat Northway. Proceeds from Wings and Wheels go to- ward restoration projects of OAHS. During the fi rst weekend of August, OAHS will host the Jim Wright Memorial Stearman Fly-In. The annual event draws owners and fans of the popular bi-planes — the fi rst planes fl own by many World War II pilots — from throughout the region. Offi cials with South Lane County Fire and Rescue say a structure fi re in the 78000 block of Highway 99 South destroyed an abandoned struc- ture in the early morning hours of Tuesday, June 23. Crews arrived on scene at about 12:30 a.m. to fi nd the structure — which they say was known to be frequented by transients — fully engulfed in fl ames. Firefi ghters say they were able to contain the fi re to the abandoned structure and keep property loss away from the adjacent shop/ware- house. A total of 12 personnel responded to the scene, and preliminary fi ndings suggest that the blaze may have begun in the brush surrounding the building, though the cause is still under investigation. New collection at Library highlights experiences of returning veterans BY JON STINNETT The Cottage Grove Sentinel T he Friends of the Cottage Grove Library know that the newest collection of books they’ve purchased for library use are diffi cult to read. But that may be why they feel so strongly that the books need to be available. Mary McNamara, President of Friends of the Library, said the new collection is comprised of books written mostly by American soldiers and reporters after tours of duty in recent con- fl icts in Iraq and Afghanistan. “We wanted to purchase these books to help Cottage Grove learn about what it’s like when these soldiers come back home,” McNamara said. “We understand that they’re a dif- fi cult read, but we don’t think most people really understand what soldiers coming back have gone through.” The Friends offered the col- lection to the Library at a cer- emony Monday that was at- tended by Cottage Grove Mayor Tom Munroe and City Coun- cilor Jeff Gowing, who also rep- resented the American Legion. The collection was inspired by a New York Times article, “Hu- man Costs of the Forever Wars, Enough to Fill a Bookshelf,” and McNamara said the effort to bring it to the Library was spearheaded by the organiza- tion’s Bruce Kelsh. Included in this collection is Phil Klay’s collection of short stories, “Re- deployment” which won the National Book Award for Fic- tion this year. “I hope these books provide the opportunity for all of us to better understand what soldiers have experienced, including the diffi cult re-entry into civil- ian life upon their return,” Mc- Namara said. “Books like ‘Re- deployment’ are diffi cult and sometimes painful to read, but are necessary reading. Because our veterans often don’t or can’t talk about what they experi- enced, these books give insight to the human costs of these wars and the need to support return- ing veterans.” Angela Arena, Cottage Grove’s Librarian, said, “This 5TH ANNUAL ELEMENTARY TRIATHLON SATURDAY, JULY 11, 2015 • 8:30AM-10:30AM Warren H. Daugherty Aquatic Center • 8th & Taylor, Cottage Grove 541-942-5533 S W I M - B I K E - R U N is a timely gift. Our summer reading program for children is about real-life heroes. These books provide insight into the experiences of our service men and women and help all of us understand what they have gone through. In addition to this col- lection of books about Iraq and Afghanistan, we have gathered books about the Viet Nam war together in another display and are encouraging adult library patrons to suggest additional books about heroes.” “If anybody can suggest an- other book that should be part of this collection, we’d be happy to purchase it,” McNamara said.
