Price attributes the interest to recent activity on Facebook, a medium in which she has in- teracted frequently with Cottage Grove residents, particularly in recent months. “I’ll be putting in more plugs for communication in the 21st Century,” she said, in likely ref- erence to a recent spat with May- or Tom Munroe, who has stated that public offi cials should shy away from social media. Price said she would count her online interaction through social me- dia as one of the most important developments of her time on the Council. “Lately, I think it’s most im- portant that there have been a lot of good conversations going on,” she said. “We’re reaching peo- ple that didn’t have a voice, and it strengthens the power of our democracy. I’m proud to have helped facilitate that, along with (Councilor) Jake (Boone).” Price said she is also proud to have been the fi rst Coun- cilor to give birth while in of- fi ce, and she’s pleased to have helped found the Be Your Best committee, which was recently photo by Jon Stinnett Kate Price became the fi rst sitting city councilor to give birth while in offi ce last year. recognized by Lane County for its work to better promote community health. Also posi- tive, she said, were efforts by the Council to keep e-cigarettes out of the hands of minors and increase the acceptable distance a smoker must stand outside a public building from 10 to 25 feet. Revisions of the City’s charter and the rules governing the City Council also took place during Price’s tenure, and she cast a vote in favor of the much- debated Main Street Refi nement Plan. On Friday, Cottage Grove City Recorder Trudy Borrevik said there is no timeline spelled out in the City’s laws for the Council to appoint a successor to Price, who had served 2 ½ years of a four-year term. Coun- cilor Jeff Gowing was the last to be appointed to a seat on the Council following the retirement of Lynn Miller in 2009; Gowing was subsequently reelected to a full term. The Council is ex- pected to place advertisements seeking candidates for the posi- tion and lay out a timeline for the appointment at its July 13 meeting. Price said that the Ward IV position can be wonderful for the right person, adding that it’s “time for new leadership” in Cottage Grove. “Cottage Grove tends to be tight-knit, and people tend to take things personally here,” she said. “You have to make sure you have an eye open to see how it may affect your personal life.” Still, she wished to thank the community for a “wonderful opportunity.” “It’s hard to leave; it’s been a privilege to be a part of this community,” she said.
