Written by Glen Bricker April 20, 2015 I got up real early to get ready for The Lord’s Day, and go to church so I could hear all He has to say. Andy picked me up so I could get to church on time, everything was so beautiful and turned out just fine. I got to greet my many brothers and sisters in The Lord, as I eagerly awaited to hear His Word. What a beautiful day! The worship time was so great as we sang about The Lord, Then shared in communion time and listened to His Word. It’s all about Jesus. He died upon The Cross and took away our sin, a gift to remind us not to go back to our old ways again. Keep looking toward Jesus and always want to know more about Heaven and all that God has in store. What a beautiful day! Somewhere among us I heard a little baby cry. One day those babies will grow up in Jesus and never deny. Someday they’ll know they were being prayed for, as they, too, come to believe all that God has in store. What a beautiful day! Honor Flight recipient recognized by church congregation BY CINDY WEELDREYER Sentinel Faith Page Editor O n Mother’s Day members of the Church of Christ on Sixth and Gibbs honored 88-year- old Glen Bricker. He joined the church 70 years ago; just before he shipped out to the South Pacifi c in the brutal last year of World War II. This month he joined two other Cottage Grove war veterans on an Honor Flight to visit the war memo- rials in Washington, D.C. According to Pastor Aaron Ear- lywine, “It was a good opportunity for us to recognize Glen for his ser- vice in WWII and the Korean War, as well as his seven decades as a respected and valued member of our church. During the service Ray- mond Bailey, a church elder, offered a prayer of thanks and blessing for Glen, who taught Sunday School for 32 of those years. He received a hearty standing ovation in both Sunday services.” Bricker was born on Dec. 23, 1926, in Trent, near Pleasant Hill. He recalled, “My mother always said I was the best Christmas present she ever got.” His childhood was spent in Thurston until his family moved to Cottage Grove in 1943. He loved sports and lettered in basketball and baseball. As a Cottage Grove High School junior he met the love of his life, Lucille Eastburn. He attended Eugene High School his senior year to spend afternoons studying radio communications at Eugene Vocational School and graduated on June 10, 1944. Six months later, on Dec. 22, he enlist- ed in the United States Navy as a radioman. Before he left he became a member of the Church of Christ on Gibbs. “I’m a true blue American and I wanted to serve my country,” Brick- photo by Cindy Weeldreyer Glen Bricker (right), a longtime member of the Church of Christ on Gibbs and a veteran of WW II and the Korean War, stands next to his pastor ,Aaron Earlywine, the day before Bricker boarded an Honor Flight to Washington, DC. er said. “Lucille and I spent a good deal of time talking about my deci- sion to join the Navy. We were so in love we considered getting married before I shipped out. Because of the major battles going on in ’44, I didn’t fi gure on coming home.” He added, “We were both raised in the Christian Church. It was our faith in God and our hope of a promising future He planned for us that we decided to wait until I came home to get married. Thankfully, God had something for me to do because he sent me back from two wars.” Bricker became a cryptolo- gist; serving 11 months on Guam handling coded messages in what would be the fi nal and deadliest year for American troops fi ghting in the South Pacifi c. Lucille wrote him a letter every day during their separation. He received an honor- able discharge in August 1946. Upon returning home they mar- ried on March 15, 1947 -- thus be- coming the last couple married in the old church before it burned to the ground. He went to work as a sawyer in the heyday of the timber industry in Cottage Grove. “In the 1950s the lumber busi- ness was booming here and there was a sawmill on every 40 (acres),” Bricker said. “I worked as a saw- yer in local mills until the Navy recalled me to serve in the Korean War on the USS Los Angeles from 1950-1952. I got a good character reference from the Cottage Grove Police Chief, so the Navy returned me to my former assignment, send- ing and receiving top-secret coded messages among Navy stations and ships.” Upon his return to Cottage Grove he worked in the woods for Porter Brothers Logging Company for 17 Please see BRICKER, Page 9A WEEKLY HAPPENINGS CHURCH-SPONSORED COMMUNITY DINNERS Mondays – United Methodist Church at 5 p.m. Tuesdays – Trinity Lutheran Church at 5 p.m. Wednesdays – Covered Bridge Church of The Nazarene at 6 p.m. Thursdays – Trinity Lutheran Church at 5 p.m. Saturdays – Church of Christ Sixth & Gibbs at 5 p.m. BAHA’I FAITH TEA AND PRAYERS Local gatherings are hosted by members of the Baha’i Faith in selected Cottage Grove sites and neighborhood homes.
