2B COTTAGE GROVE SENTINEL May 20, 2015 B OYS T RACK A ND F IELD Continued from 1B off a late charge by Sweet Home’s Eric Flierl for a wire- to-wire victory in the 110 meter hurdles. “When [Flierl] started pull- ing up to me, I got tense and thought, ‘Oh man, I just need to win,’ he said. “So I tried go- ing even harder, and I hit a few more but I cleaned up my race at the end.” Tharpe, who also placed third in the 100 and the 300 hurdles, is making his second-straight trip to state 110 hurdles and his fi rst as the district champion. “It means everything to me,” he said of his fi rst league title. “I’ve been working so hard to get up to this point and it’s ex- citing.” In the 800, Tyler Ledford ran a conservative 2:04.46 to fi nish second and qualify for state. Through the early part of the season, Ledford considered himself more of a 3000-meter runner, but he said that he has defi nitely found his race in the 800. Lion Brad Geisler also punched his ticket to state with a second-place fi nish in the dis- cus on Thursday. “I feel honored because that’s been the goal all season,” he said. Geisler, who has had an in- consistent season, entered the fi nals in second with a mark of 117-2 and fell into third when a Junction City freshman launched a 121-foot, fi ve-inch throw. But Geisler did not panic and reclaimed second place on his very next throw — a mark of 125-4. “Stressing about throwing good was how I started to slump in the fi rst place,” he said. “So, instead of looking at it as an- other guy who could beat me, I stayed calm and threw it right back in his face.” The Lions narrowly missed out on berths to state in the 4x100 and 4x400 relays. In the short relay, Cottage Grove entered the fi nal pass in fi rst place, but anchor Bryn- den Howell, who had been sick during the week and scratched from his individual events, was passed by Sweet Home and Junction City. The long relay team of Tucker Porter, Jayden Tucker, Ledford and Howard fi nished in 3:30.58, just behind Sisters (3:29.68) and Junction City (3:30.10). Howard was unoffi cially clocked at 49.9 on his anchor leg. The Lions, who fi nished with 118 team points, came close to second place, which was shared by Junction City and Sweet Home with 122 each. But no- body was catching Elmira, who outdistanced the competition with 208 points. The Falcons got eight individ- ual victories en route to victory. Zach Beltz won the 100, 200, long jump and triple jump; Zane Wardwell, who was named fi eld athlete of the meet, took fi rst place in the shot put and discus; and Gary Younce and Jeff Linn added victories in the javelin and pole vault, respectively. Sweet Home’s Jakob Hiett, who shared track athlete of the meet honors with Beltz, won the 1,500 and 3,000. G IRLS T RACK A ND F IELD Sky-Em Baseball Team Sisters Sweet Home Elmira Cottage Grove Junction City Sutherlin Continued from 1B “Coming into this I was con- fi dent and had the mindset that I was going to tear up the compe- tition,” she said. Borigo, who has only been throwing the shot since last year, said she did not anticipate being the district favorite at the start of the season when she was still hovering around 34 feet, but she became more comfortable with that expectation as she contin- ued to improve. “Next week at state, I’m just hoping to beat my own mark,” she said. “And if I can get my glides down I should be able to do that because I’ve done all of my far throws this year standing up.” Teammate Courtney Hammel also took home a district title. She came into the meet ranked second in the discus but threw a PR of 118-6 and beat her closest competitor by fi ve feet. “I just did what I always do,” said Hammel, who improved on her previous best by over four feet. “I’ve gotten second place at every invitational we’ve been to this year, and I told myself that today was the day that I was go- ing to take that fi rst place spot.” Weybright qualifi ed for state by taking second in the 800. Af- ter coming through the fi rst lap in 73 seconds, she surged to the lead with 300 meters to go. But Junction City’s Shayla Solomon covered Weybright’s move and kicked past her over the fi nal 50 meters to win, 2:25.50 to 2:26.19. “I wanted get a little more of a gap [on the fi eld] and it seemed to work for a little bit,” Weybright said of her move to the lead. “ But Shayla is a very strong runner; I wasn’t surprised that she was there in the end. Things just didn’t pan out as I’d hoped, but it happens.” Weybright also qualifi ed for state in the 3,000 by fi nishing second on Thursday, but she said she will only run the 800 at state, which begins Thursday at Hayward Field. In the 300 meter hurdles, Cot- tage Grove’s Celeste Pelham battled Sisters’ Sabrina Reif- schneider all the way down the homestretch for second place. I was really hop- ing to beat [Reifschneider] but after the last hurdle there was nothing left to give.” Cottage Grove freshman Keara Murphy also narrowly missed out on qualifying for state. After prelims of the long jump, she was in second place with a mark of 15-4.75, which was over a foot better than her previous PR. But Junction City's Kamryn Knox leapt out to 15- 9 in the fi nals to push Murphy down to third. The Lions also got third-place showings from Hannah Albrecht and Melissa Powers in the 100 and javelin, respectively. Erynn Ricker, a freshman for Sisters, was named track ath- lete of the meet after picking up three individual victories. She won the 100 in 13.13, the 200 in 26.78 and the pole vault with a clearance of 9-8. Knox cleared 4-10 to win the high jump to add to her victory in the long jump. She took home fi eld athlete of the meet honors.
