Feb. 25, 1965 Feb. 10, 2015 New laws proposed for teenage drivers Feb. 19, 2015 A Cottage Grove principal has drafted a new proposal that would allow youngsters to receive a learner’s permit at the age of 15, a driver’s permit at 16, and a driver’s license at 18. The proposal, now in the hands of State Representative Keith Skelton, D-Eu- gene, has received the support of the South Lane Education Association. The proposal was drafted by Lee Hen- ningsgaard, principal at Lincoln Junior High School, who has recently voiced con- cern over the growing number of traffi c fa- talities, and the disregard some youngsters seem to have over the necessity for respon- sible driving. Favorable response to Henningsgaard’s proposal was almost unanimous when it was presented to the South Lane Education Association. Mrs. Guy Leabo, president of the group, said only four of the more than 100 members of SLEA indicated they were not in favor of the proposal. State law now allows youngsters a learn- er’s permit if they pass a written test at age 15. The learner’s permit is in force until they are 16 when they are licensed to drive upon passing a test. POLICE BLOTTER Feb. 16 Henningsgaard’s proposal calls for con- tinuance of present regulations in issuing learner’s permits at age 15, but adds a physi- cal examination by a doctor to check eyes, heart and physical refl exes.
