COTTAGE GROVE SENTINEL February 18, 2015 Cat Condo Comforts at the bottom for the cats. We keep their litter on the porch in the summer, and in the bath- room for the winter. They also have a tall cat scratching post outside to climb and enjoy the view. I t was a brilliant idea. Selling their large family home, leaving all that house and yard work behind and moving into a two-story townhouse with its many benefi ts — even for the household’s Siamese siblings, Kit and Ka- boodle. “We adopted Kit Kat fi rst,” said Kari’s moth- er Tracy, “and named her after our favorite chocolate bar because of her chocolate-brown markings. A year later her parents had another litter, and we brought home her brother, Ka- boodle. They are full brother and sister; they just don’t know it because they were not lit- termates. They are nine and 10 years old now and they did very well with the move. They actually appear much happier. Our condo has a southern exposure, so sun pours through the windows for their napping pleasure. They exercise by running up and down our 32 steps, and there are two porches to enjoy fresh air. And they purr-fur the condo’s carpets over the house’s hardware fl oors. Their favorite two spots, to perch like furry birds high in a tree, are at the top of each level of stairs staring down at us below. In the move, our cats also scored a living quarters upgrade. In the house they slept in our big laundry room, but here they have taken over the master bedroom. Their favorite place to scratch is still our bamboo laundry basket. For safety we attached a tracking device to their collars in case they got out. It is like a cat GPS device that beeps on their collars so they know we are looking for them, and I have a clicker that indicates which direction they are in. It is like a walkie-talkie of sorts and it also lights up so we can spot them at night. It came in handy one day when I could not fi nd the cats. With three busy teens and hus- band, the cats can sneak out the door. So be- fore I headed to work, I beeped their collars but could only locate Kaboodle. When I pressed it again and followed the clicker’s screen, it in- dicated that Kit was next to the wall, but there was no cat there. She had not only snuck out our door, she had snuck into the neighbors condo and was sitting on the other side of the Indoor cats need grass like outdoor cats. It is fi lled with healing chlorophyll. We planted some on the porch for them. Mod- ern technology again. I phoned my neighbor and she unlocked her door with her cell phone and I rescued the cat. We chose these two cats because their par- ents are dog-like and enjoy following their owners on walks. So, when we moved here, we started taking our kitties out for walks. They love it! We walk a loop around our quiet block with them trotting along beside us — without leashes. Because they have the tracking col- lars we don’t worry about losing them. They like to investigate under bushes, which they could not do so easily on leashes. We whistle, encouraging them to rejoin us, and we walk about a mile together. Having a dog with our busy schedule would be a diffi cult commitment. Cats are purr-fect for us; they don’t bark which would bother neighbors, they enjoy the peaceful life of sit- ting on laps, and they are independent and af- fectionate.” “I love my cats,” adds Kari, “because they are adorable, great company, and easy to care for, but the main reason is because they are such loving creatures.” In our old family home Kaboodle was un- nerved when neighborhood cats stared in the window at him. He was neutered, but he responded by ‘spraying’ inside our home. When we moved here, our vet recommended plugging in a pheromone spray, over putting Kaboodle in cat diapers. AND — it really worked! I plugged in the pheromone vaporizer and it makes Kaboodle think he’s rubbed and claimed every corner of our home with his sali- vary glands. He’s a different cat, so relaxed. The pheromone is an added expense, but our home will always have one. During his spraying time I discovered pet products for removing urine and its odor off walls, furniture, duvets - seriously miracle products! We are all happy with our town- house move, not having to keep up with so much house and yard work allows us more time together and to be involved in sports.” View amazingly/beautiful indoor cat walks. www.catchannel.com/cat-news/2014/09/min- nesota-man-builds-cat-maze.aspx Every pet has a story! (541) 942-2789 Historic Preservation workshop features collaboration between several groups A historic preservation workshop series scheduled this spring will bring the agencies responsible for preserving Cottage Grove’s history together, and organizers hope representatives from historical entities in other communities stop by as well. Lane Community College, the City of Cottage Grove Historic Landmarks Commission, Cottage Grove Part- ners in History, Cottage Grove Historical Society, Cot- tage Grove Genealogical Society, Bohemia Gold Min- ing Museum and Cottage Grove Museum will team up to offer a series of fi ve weekly workshops aimed at exposing participants to best practices in the fi eld of Heritage Preservation. The workshops will be held on the second Tuesday of each month from 6:30- 8:30 p.m., from April 14-Aug. 11 at the Lane Community College Cottage Grove Campus, 1275 River Rd. in Cottage Grove. Sessions are aimed at anyone involved in heritage preservation activities regardless of experience or skill level. Participants that complete at least four of the fi ve workshops in the series will earn a program completion award from Lane Community College. Topics covered at the workshops will include care of historic documents, newspapers, textiles and photo- graphs as well as basic training in Past Perfect, a soft- ware program widely used in the fi eld. City Planner Amanda Ferguson said two Cottage Grove entities — the Genealogical Society and Cottage Grove Museum — have already received grants related to newspaper and fabric preservation, respectively. “Since we had those two already, we thought, ‘Why not expand it to four or fi ve topics and get everybody involved?” Ferguson said. Workshop instructors will be drawn from the Oregon State Offi ce of Historic Preservation’s MentorCorps program. MentorCorps consists of professionals work- ing in the fi eld of Heritage Preservation and trained to provide instruction in their area of expertise. Workshops will cost $10 each. Proceeds will benefi t the sponsoring organizations. Participants will register through Lane Community College.
