He also said that ESDs should not remain un- regulated simply because they are less harmful than cigarettes. Councilor Heather Murphy said she was likewise concerned about a completely unregulated product, citing the packaging and fl avors that could be attrac- tive to young people. Recognizing that his peers would likely pass the ordinance, Councilor Boone offered sever- al questions about its language. For example, how it would be applied to out-of-town guests. City Manager Richard Mey- ers said that these confl icts are not uncommon and typically aren’t signifi cant obstacles. He also assured the Council that any steps towards regulation at the local level would not be null should the state and/or federal governments issue future legis- lation on ESDs. The Council passed the or- dinance with an amendment to extend the smoking boundary at entrances, exits, and windows of public places or places of employment from 10 feet to 25 feet. In his State of the City address at the Jan. 26 meeting, Mayor Tom Munroe asked the Council to consider renaming Woodson Park in honor of Lindsey Haskell to recognize his contributions to the community. City staff, with the Cottage Grove Historical Society, determined that renam- ing the park would not break any previously bestowed honors or recognition. The Council approved six ap- pointments to the Budget Com- mittee. These individuals in- clude: Greg Ervin, Brad Borigo, Pamala Reber, Kenneth Rob- erts, Chris Holloman and Gary Williams. L OVE Continued from page 6A married on the exact same day — May 26, 1956 — though thousands of miles separated the Gilkison wedding in Sutherlin, Oregon and the Meisners’ union in Chicago, Illinois. The Gilkisons were married a year after meeting at the Brown and Allen Chevrolet dealership in Sutherlin, where the purchase of a 1955 Chevy Bel-Air by Barb’s family and an upgrade to an identical car owned by Dick brought them together. Over the years, the distance between the couples lessened as the Meisners moved fi rst to California, where they spent 30 years and John Meisner worked at Boeing, and then to Cottage Grove, to follow their son (also named John) who at one time served as this City’s civil engi- neer. The Meisners have now lived in Cottage Grove for 21 years, and visitors to Victoriana Antiques may recognize Janice Meisner from her work there. After more small talk, the Gilkisons and Meisners dis- covered that they live just a few blocks from each other in Cot- tage Grove, though they ended their chance encounter without exchanging contact information and have not spoken since. For the two couples, who will mark 60 years together next year, a marriage that can stand the test of time owes its success to two things — “compromise and more compromise,” as Jan- ice Meisner put it. “It’s an even give-and-take,” Barb Gilkison said, “and it seems to have always worked out.” The Gilkisons say they’re grateful for the opportunity to meet the Meisners, and they hope to connect again in the fu- ture. “It was one of those chance meetings that makes a real im- pression on you, and I hope we get a chance to talk again,” Dick Gilkison said.
