6A COTTAGE GROVE SENTINEL February 11, 2015 Lasting love makes its impression on two Cottage Grove couples Gilkisons and Meisners discover common ground over dinner BY JON STINNETT The Cottage Grove Sentinel I t’s a small world, as the saying goes, and two Cottage Grove couples re- cently learned just how small during a chance meeting in Eugene. Dick and Barbara Gilkison were en- joying a dinner at Sizzler not long ago when they noticed an uncommon close- ness between the couple seated next to them. “I noticed that he was very affection- ate toward her,” Dick Gilkison said. “He obviously didn’t get around very well, and she helped him put his coat on. What struck me was the tenderness involved.” “They were just so nice,” Barb Gilki- son said. “She was so gentle with him — kind of the opposite of Dick and I.” “We’re sort of ornery toward each other,” her husband explained. “They could tell we’d been together a long time, because it looked like we were taking care of each other,” said Janice Meisner, who was enjoying a night out with her husband, John. “I asked how long they had been mar- ried, and they said 58 years,” Dick Gilki- son said. “We thought that was funny, since we’d been married 58 years, too.” In talking further, the couples discovered that they had been courtesy photos Many miles separated the May 26, 1956 weddings of Barb and Dick Gilkison (left) and Janice and John Meisner. The couples recently met by chance in Eugene.
