Groat at his residence, 1444 Madison avenue, it being the eighty- second anniversary o f his birthday. Social converse, reading, recitations, speeches, singing and prayer made the hours pass pleasantly. A nice lunch was served. The working girls o f the city gave a leap year party Monday night in Moose hall. The girls carried out the leap year idea by going after the boys and escorting them to the hall. LURCH’S / A simple way to make gravies, corn- starch puddings or custards that will not be lumpy is to remove the milk, sugar and other ingredients, supposing it is cornstarch pudding one is making, from the stove long enough to stop the boiling. This heats them gradually, not allowing them to cook before they are thoroughly mixed with the milk. Keep it in a closed dish on the sidebourd, wrapped iu a da nip napkin; otherwise it becomes dry and oily. • • • Sassafras oil sprinkled on the shelves and in the corner o f closets and pan- tries will keep them free from ants, moths and other insects. • • • A little crushed borax, i f spinkled thickly on a flannel cloth that is wot with hot wuter and well soaped, will brighten copperware. • • • A pretty cushion is made o f white linen, with a large butterfly worked in coronation braid in the renter. The edge should have a plain two-inch hem. Dots on the bu tterfly's wings may be worked iu tiny eyelets. India cottou in the blue nud white patterns is ex cellent for hard usage. They wash well and do not fade. When making up an embroidered pillow pluce a thick sheet o f cottou wadding under the cover. Both the appearance and the feel o f the cushion are improved. • • • To remove the rusty appearance from black suede shoes, rub with equal quan tity o f olive oil and black ink.
