It being the occasion o f the annual experience social, the ways and means o f earning a dollar were told both in poetry and prose. The receipts o f the day were very satisfactory. The hostesses were Mrs. Job. Mrs. Buckley, Mrs. Blackmore and Mrs. Merryman, assisted by Ireta Cooley and Muriel Shay. First National Bank Cottage Grove, Ore. Reception for Rev. and Mrs. H. N. Aldrich and Family A reception was given Rev. and Mrs. H. N. Aldrich on last Wednesday even ing which was one o f the pleasant a f fairs o f the season. In addition to the social side o f the a ffa ir there was a program o f vocal and instrumental mu sic, including piano selections by Mrs. Robert S u tcliffe and vocal selections by Mrs. Leon Des I.arzes, Mr. C. E. Umphrey and Miss Mary Ellen Ben son; also readings by Miss Eunice Van Denburg and Miss Mildred Prin gle. Those in the receiving line with Mr. and Mrs. Aldrich were Mrs. Joe Porter and Mrs. J. H. Chambers. Ligh t refreshments were served. Altogether it was a very pleasaDt a ffa ir and an auspicious beginning o f the third year o f the pastorate o f Pastor Aldrich. E. Stewart, county fruit Inspector, found an immense grape vine on the farm o f U. O. Finer on the McKenxie river. The vine has four arms extend ing in that many directions and each one is 80 feet long. The branches are trained ou trellises seven feet high and the vine ia literally covered with big sweet grapea, says Mr. Stewart. Four years ago, Mr. Enter told him, he gath ered 800 pounds o f the fruit from the vine. Mr. Kiner did not know how long the vine had been growing but it wus about as large aa it is now when he bought the place a number o f years ago. Mr. Stewart also found on the Kiner place n white fig tree, which is only the fourth he has seeu in I.ane County. There are two crops o f this variety of figs, the first one maturing about the middle o f September, but the second one seldom mutures in this climate. At the N. N. Kaldor place, between W alterville and l.eaburg, Mr. Stewart found some o f the best corn he has ever seen in his life. Mr. Kaldor told him that by actual measurement, taking two bushels o f shucked corn to one shelled, he had 100 bushels o f shelled corn to the acre, which ia an immense yield, even for the well known corn states of the middle west. Mr. Stewart says the McKenzie Valley is the best rnrn coun try he has seen in Oregon. The soil seems to grow anything, and the rorn grows to perfection. The ground all the way up, ns far as it is cultivated, is a sandy loam and is very rich. Home o f the best apples he ever saw were also found by the fruit inspector on his trip up the river. Can’t Oet Cars Enough Silverton Appeal: The Hilverton Lumber company is finding it difficult st present to get oars enough to handle their increased orders from outside points. The prices on lumber have not varied much for several months past, but the fall trade is stimulating orders. The company could use 50 cars right now i f it were possible to get them. Subscribers o f county pnpers often allow their subscription to become de linquent through carelessness, and yet feel insulted i f their paper is stopped or a statement o f their delinquency is sent to them. They do not expect any courtesy from metropolitan papers, but the county papers are expected to come whether they are paid for or not.
