Ths Red Polled cow la a dual pur pose animal, well suited to th* methods of farmers who are rais ing cattle for both dairying and beef As the cows are excellent milkers and uf large slxe, they suit these conditions and fill this de mand. Their uniform dark red col or la eepeclally attractive, and the absence of horns also commends them to farmers. The cow shown la a typical Red Toll. Tbs Red Polls ate said to have come from hornless red cows that have bean bred In certain counties of England for a number of years. necessary here to disease the superi ority o f Ited Polled cattle over Guern seys for producing meat Oar evidence supporting this fact la found In the presence from year to year of Red Polls at tbe Smlthfield Cattle club show In England and tbe International fat stock show In Chicago. When tt Is remembered that a large part of tbe Bed Polled herd were all bred upon tbe farm It must be con ceded that tbe results are very credit able to the breed and to the owners of the same. In the advanced registry for the breed twenty-four milk records came from this herd In 1913. It has now to Its credit twenty official rec on! s thHt average 396 pounds o f butter fat. In the herd la tbe cow Pear. This cow completed her last yearly record Dec. 27. 1013. She gave 13.100.6 pounds o f milk, which gave 003.8 pounds of fat. the equivalent o f 724.5 pounds o f butter. This record makes her tbe champion producer o f the breed. In four consecutive years the haa produced 1,807.0 pounds o f butter fat. a record that haa not been equaled by any cow o f any breed In Minnesota, and Minnesota Is looked upon as a leading dairy state. In thla herd la also Jenn Duluth Beauty 31725, which as a heifer gave 10.019.8 pounds o f milk and 442.95 pounds of butter fa t l This gives her first place In the world's records for Red Polled heifers. She was bred on tbe farm. Mr. George p. Grout, the manager, states that ten cows from this herd In the 1913 ad- | vanced registry have 400.2 pounds of butter fat to their credit tlste* and mulls are softer and launder well if carefully handled, hut the linen will outwear them every time. Various other sheer cottons have come into popularity. Swiss and or- gnndle lire, of course, old favorites, but their crispness, once their chief merit, ha* made them yield place somewhat to the softer mulls and batistes and linens, though they nre still liked. The cottou nets, voiles und rra|>es are more recent arrival* and have achieved de rided popularity These launder well, are easily han dled and are very soft, graceful and durable despite their sheerness, and they le-id themselves admirably to sim ple forms of trimming, although they may be made very elaborate with band ern broidery. The cotton nets come In varying meshes. In wide widths and are not ex :: tremely ex|H‘iislve.
