HARDWARE INSPIRATION FROM ORES WELL. Cottage Grove might well take pattern from its neighbor Cres well in some ways. We have in mind the recent gala day celebration there in honor of the successful completion of the first yea r’s opera tion of its cannery. Cottage Grove might just as well as not have had such a celebra tion itself but for its slight oversight in not providing a cannery year ago. It even appears now that such a celebration cannot be helt a year hence. But The Sentinel believes that if every berry grower and gardener in the Cottage Grove country could have attended the recent stockholders’ meeting at Creswell and could have witnessei the ease with which a couple of thousand dollars of additional capita was secured from those already owning stock, the money necessary to establish a cannery here would be subscribed several times over A fundamental principle of a cooperative plant is that the stock be subscribed by those who will furnish the raw material, but it seems impossible to get growers here to take up the proposition. Produce sufficient in value almost to build a cannery goes to waste nearly every year in the Cottage Grove country, and yet the growers hesitate to risk a few dollars apiece for fear of losing it through mismanagement or failure of some kind. It ia hard to understand why such conditions should prevail, but they do, nevertheless. And Creswell had the same experience that Cottage Grove is having. It remained for a few men, a very few, to take the matter in hand and push it to a successful conclusion. It seems that such action will have to be taken here before any results are accomplished. The Sentinel is fairly well convinced that nothing will be done until two or three members of the grange and two or three business men take hold with a determination to push the propositioh to an immediate and successful conclusion. MIGHT GET INTO STATE HOUSE. Legislative jobs are going a-begging this year in Lane County. Senator Calkins is a candidate for County Judge, Representative C J. Hurd is a candidate for County Commissioner, Representatives Allen Eaton and M. Vernon Parsons are non-committal and Senator L. E. Bean is not anxious. This leaves plenty of opportunity for can didates from some other part of the county than Eugene. There is no reason why Cottage Grove may not secure one of the plaees by asking for it. It is a long time since Cottage Grove has had a member of the legislature and it is barely possible that the indorse ment of Eugene might be secured for a suitable candidate from here at tkis time. Material is not lacking either. Among those that come to the mind of The Sentinel who would make suitable legislators are Mayor Chambers, who has had legislative experience, J. S. Medley, C. II. Burkholder, C. E. Stewart, J. F. Spray, Geo. O.'Knowles, C. M. Shinn. Both parties are represented in this array of prospective timber, but there is a dearth of candidates on both tickets. Cottage Grove might play safe by having a candidate on both sides. This is a proposition that is at least worthy of serious considera tion. Cottage Grove should take its full part in the county of which it is so important a part. Chaa. H. Fisher, former editor of the Eugene Guard, has pur chased the Salem Journal. The Sentinel is not an overly strong ad mirer of some of Mr. Fisher’s editorial work, but nevertheless be lieves the Capital City will benefit by the addition of a newspaper man of Mr. Fisher’s ability. We have heard of another family which read The Sentinel a few months and billed its goods direct to Cottage Grove sight unseen. The moral is plain. The growing need of the Cottage Grove country is a larger num ber of energetic farmers. That may be a pun, but i t ’s no joke. Cottage Grove wants a depot in keeping with the progress of the eity.
