How to Make a Fly Trap
Dr. Hodge gives minute description for hoys who would aid in
cleaning up the city o f Cottage Grove
Simplicity is the moat remarkable
feature of Dr. Hodge's fly trap which
he sdviaes the small hoy* o f Eugene to
make for use end sale during the prea-
ent anti-fly cruaade.
The trap la made from an empty soap
box, o f any size available. Knock off
the bottom and top or two opposite
aide*. Then cover these open sidea
with wire screen netting, making how­
ever a " V ” or fold lengthwise out o f
the netting, pointing it inward and up­
ward. For instance, suppose the epen
end o f the box ia a foot square. Cut a
sheet o f netting 13 inches by 18 or 20.
Thia makes the sheet one inch wider
and aix to eight inches longer than the
opening.
Now bend the wire at right angles
half an Inch on each o f the two long
edges
This half inch ia used to tack
the wire to the inside o f the box.
Measuring up from the bottom o f
the sheet o f w ire a little more than
half the height o f the opening, fold In­
ward the " V ” in the netting. The
half inch margin muat be cut wherever
the bend ia made. When the tw o aides
are fsatened in with tack* the two
V ’a are opposite each other inside,
their edirea being two or three inches
apart. The netting can he easily cut
with an old pair o f shears or grass
scissors.
The fly crawla up the netting and
guea into the " V ” up which he crawla
until he cornea to the crotch. Here a
row o f holea are punched with a big
nail or spike, and when the fly walks
up Into the end o f the " V ” he goea
through one o f these holea and does not
come out.
It will he neceasary to put a piece
from the top of the trap through which
the arm can reach to tack the second
aide of wire on. Through this opening

It may not be exactly a pleasant
subject to touch upon, yet there ia
value in once in a while taking s
whack at the fallow who tries to “ h og"
every piece o f mineral ground open to
location in a new camp.
Evidences o f his activities are to be
found in almoat every new camp, the
posaibie 'exception being in those camps
where there has been a great ruah and
enough. o f the power o f might, the
might o f public opinion backed by phy-
aical force, to make it prudent for the
two footed couain o f the hog to remain
in the background.
Very seldom doea the biped whose
characteristics so much resemble thoae
o f hia quadruped couain benefit to any
great extent from hia a c tivities; for
where the might o f public opinion ia
strong enough he may well be induced
to let go o f ail claims except those
which he really Intenda to develop, and
where he still holds on, the very fact
o f hia controlling so much territory
tends to drive away possible buyers.
The purpose in allowing hia quad­
ruped couain to grab so much feed is
to At hiui that much sooner for the
butcher. The biped is apt to perform
thia office for himself, insofar that he
is by his presence tending to drive
away thoae who might otherwise be­
come interested in the new camp.
Dr. Stephen M. Babcock, professor
o f agricultural chemistry at the Uni­
versity o f Wia:onsin, retired the other
day in comfortable, but not affluent
circumstances. His case is worthy o f
consideration, for immense wealth, was
once within his reach. Y e t he was not
blinded by the prospect; he saw hia
true relation to the w orld ; he placed
service above piled up dollar«.
An instance o f this kind in connec­
tion with a certain small camp in Colo­
rado. Thia camp came to notice in the
winter, when tnowa lay deep and no
rocks were to be seen beneath the
mantle o f white. It is stated o f thia
camp that one man became so active
as to locate 40 claims, all within a
radius o f one square mile. On none o f
theae claims did he do any location
work, merely erecting stakes, then
kept himself busy warning away any
prospector who might ge t in his neigh­
borhood.
When spring freshets came moat o f
his location atakea were washed away,
having only been stuck in the snow,
those left being 10 or 16 feet above the
ground fastened in the branches o f a
tree. No work whatever has he at­
tempted—and yet he wonders why the
new camp ia not equaling Cripple Creek
or Leadville.
The hog is a useful animal, even
though he ia only used, as in the hot
countries, for a scavenger.
It is a question whqjher thia much
may be aaid o f his namesake.
Far better it would be fo r him to
apend hia time on one claim than to
make himself land poor, and despised
as a hog. _
