THE PACIFIC HIGHWAY.
D E T E R M IN E D effort is being m ade on the part of resideuts

eastern section has a good prospect of succeeding in its de

chance in a thousand if the roads of W estern Oregon were in as good
condition as those Eastern Oregon can give. T he worst section of this
W estern Oregon highway is the Pass Creek C anyon road just a short
distauce south of Cottage Grove iu Douglas C ounty. If this stretch
were m ade a smooth, m acadam road, passable in wiuter, W estern O re­
gon would doubtless hold the Pacific H ighw ay. A highw ay will even
tually be built through Eastern Oregon anyw ay, and that section of
the state will get some of the travel, and eveu if the official highw ay
were through Eastern Oregon, W estern Oregon would still get a la rg e
part of the traffic. But W estern Oregon can have more. It can retain
the official Pacific H ighw ay. All that is necessary is good roads.
T he Douglas County court has promised to fix Pass Creek Canyou
th is year, but it is dilly-dallying along, and while exteusive repairs
are being m ade on Lane County roads around Cottage Grove nothing
is being done with the canyon. Bids have beeu called for and rejected.
T his may have been ulerely a smooth way of getting out of doing the
work this year. We should m ake it a point to find out. W hen all
th at is necessary to get the road is to get the County Court to keep its
promise, we should see th at it is kept.
Residents of Comstock, Drain aud vicinity descended upon the
County Court in a body and got the promise of having the road fixed.
O thers are just as interested as the residents of Comstock and Drain,
and the whole responsibility need not be left to farm ers along the road.
The Roseburg Commercial Club has attem pted to get under way
a concerted movement to retain the Pacific H ighw ay for W estern O re­
gon. It can practically achieve its object w ithout leaving home. Let
it use its influence on the County Court in its own city in getting the
money promised spent on Pass Creek Canyon.

W ith cedar rotting and wasted by the m illions of feet, shingles
are shipped from Portland. Around Cottage Grove there are m illions
of feet of shingle timber. Cottage Grove has some reputation as a
m illing city, but yet these m illions of feet of cedar are not being m ade
into shingles, while m illionsof shingles go through the city in transit. In
fact some couple million feet are shipped in here every year. W ith a
m arket reaching from m idway between here and Portland to midway
between here and ’Frisco, it seems as if Cottage G rove should be
m aking shingles. W hile hollering for industries it seems as if this in ­
dustry would be one that it should be little trouble to locate here.
