UNAPPRECIATED EFFORT.
| VERY C IT Y has a few citizens who give of time and money to
further and promote som ething in which they tak e unusual in­
terest, but which is of value to the entire com m unity, and whose sa cri­
fices are unappreciated. Sometimes it is a playground, som etim es a
park, sometimes a library, sometimes a ball team , sometimes som ething
else. In the case of Cottage Grove it is at present a ball team , and
two of Cottage G rove’s business men, G. M. M arksbury and C. A.
Rartell, have done m uch to give the city a live team , provide healthy
am usem ent for Sunday afternoona and give the city some good adver­
tising. And they have succeeded. T he C ottage Grove ball team has
played pennant w inning ball all season. But one gam e has been lost.
In financing the proposition, however, they have not been so success­
ful. Despite the fact that there are no salaried players, there was a
deficit last year. This year the prospects are about as bright. Im ­
provem ents on the grounds have been out of the question. T he b a c k ­
ers of the team may not be seriously inconvenienced by their losses,
but it is doubtful if they will attem pt to furnish ball gam es another
season. And they can hardly be blam ed. Even the most e n th u sia s­
tic fans get tired after awhile of expending unappreciated effort on a
losing proposition.
