There is so much in it of value to all employes th at it is here given in f u ll: The new-born year brought to the express a com petitor worthy of ita m ettle the new parcel post. This country has had a parcel post for many years. The new plan, is, however, a radical enlargem ent of the old, in rais ing the weight lim it of packages from four to eleven pounds, in establishing a lower scale of rates through a zone system and in requiring the issue of a special scries of stam ps. A great many Wells Fargo men have hardly known ju st how to view this new competitor. There should be no hesitancy aa to their attitude. They should tre a t this newcomer as worthy of respect, realizing th at he represents governm ental policy and is an experi ment of national interest. And they should remember th a t the express, vi tal to the commercial life of the nation, gains growth and strength, not by op posing competition, but by rendering a service which best m eets public neces sity and convenience. For three-quarters of a century the express has been a vital part in the greatest commercial grow th the world has ever witnessed, and Wells Fargo & Company's service is today a mighty factor in the life of the nation. The Wells Fargo pony rider, with his saddle bags, rendered a personal service. Personal service is an essential to the express. It is individual. More than one-half of its employes come in per sonal touch with the public. The parcel post thus becomes a com petitor, not only of the company, but of every man in its service. Hence, the newcomer, as an im portant factor in small parcel transportation is neither to be belittled nor over e sti mated, but calls most for renewed efforts on the part of Wells Fargo men to m aintain the com pany’s standard of service, as the basis of public favor and patronage. Incubator vs. Hen Hatching Experi ment An experim ent to determ ine w hether the incubator will hatch as many chicks from a given num ber of eggs as a good settin g hen, and w hether incubator chicks will be as strong in vitality, has been begun by some members of the Oregon A gricultural Experim ent League, composed of farm ers in terested in working out. in cooperation with the extension division of the Ore gon A gricultural College, problems along many lines. The records to be kept in this poul try experim ent, No. 202, will show the number of eggs set, the num ber in fer tile, the number of chicks hatched, and the number of chicks dead in the shell. To show the relative vitality of the chicks hatched by the two methods, a record of the chicks that die should be kept. To make the test more accurate some incubator chicks should be put with^hen hatched chicks under hens to brood, and also some hen hatched chicks should be put with incubator chicks in brooders, and m ortality rec ords of both kept for four weeks. A t least three good settin g hens and one incubator should be used, set at the same tim e with the same kind of eggs. The care and fairness with which the eggs are selected will in fluence the accuracy of results largely, as eggs vary greatly in hatching quali ties. A PROFIT WINNER Fred W right, of W’alker, is a firm believer in the hog as a m eans of help ing to m ake the Oregon farm profit able. He has reason to be. From one brood sow and her pigs he realized $;197.91 in a single year. T hat is a good sum. I t is an average of more than $33 a m onth during the entire year. Mr. W right is pleased with w hat he has accomplished, and plans to do still more in the fu tu re. He says: “ It seems stran g e to me th a t the farm ers of Lane county do not pay more a t tention to raising corn and pigs. There are no other crops, which when worked together, bring such quick and rich re tu rn s.” If Mr. W right, by pointing to w hat he has done him self, can convert his neighbors to the belief th a t they m ust raise more hogs, he will be doing his com m unity a distinct service. The hog is a rem arkable aid to prosperity. O regon has too little help from this source, fo r the num ber of hogs th a t F irst through-train se r v ic e o v er th e are raised in the sta te is fa r too Salem . Flock Owners Advised to Use Care in Preventing Infectation. rFrom Eugene R egister.) To the E ditor: R egarding an article in your issue of F ebruary 21, and desiring to in form the stock grow ers of Lane coun ty as to th e -'fa c ts regarding liver flukes th a t have been causing loss of goats in Lane county, near C ottage d rove, it ap pears to me th a t the im presión is given th a t the wet season o f tl.e year produced them by sp onta neous origin and th a t w et pastu re at this tim e of the year were alive with them and th a t the condition could be treated medicinally. But such is not the case, as a life history of these p arasites will show. There are three common varieties of flukes in the U nited S tates, known as Distoma H epaticum , Distoma Ameri- canus and Distom a Lanceolata. They are not leeched. The ad u lt p arasites infest the bile ducts of cattle, sheep, goats and more rarely horses, hogs, logs and cats. They are flat, leaf ihaped worms of various sizes from tw o-fifths of an inch to one and one- half inches long by one-tw enty-fifth to tw o-tw enty-fifths of an inch wide, with a poined a n te rio r end. These adult flukes lay eggs th a t pass out of the bile ducts into the in testines and on the ground in the late spring. If they find a favorable wet place they hatch in from five to six weeks. These larvae then go through a stage of development and increase in num bers by budding when they find th eir host, which is a sm all w ater snail. W ithout the snail it would not develop fu rth e r th an hatch in g and would die in about three of fo u r days. The snails have the same g eograph ical distribution as the flukes. A fter leaving the snails they float on w ater and are capable of a ttach in g them selves on blades of grass and there se cret a gelatinous cover, which protects it and will then retain its v itality a long tim e in most localities. They a p pear as small white specks on the g rass and are eaten in infested p as tures. .They m ay also reach th e stom ach by the anim al eatin g a snail or drink ing infested w ater. On reaching the stom ach, the capsule is dissolved and the larvae liberated. They find th e ir way to the bile ducts and liver and grow there. They will live and ovál ate th ere and then die a f te r six months. This m alady known as flukes o r liv e r-ro t or distom iasis, is divided into four periods: F irst, larvae im m ig ra tion last four to th irteen weeks and does not cause any excessive d istu rb ance. Second, from late Septem ber to November, a fte r the th irte e n th week of infestation, anim als are less lively and while ap p etite is good, it dimin- inshes la te r on and th irs t increases, mucous m em branes a re yellowish, anim als show g reat w eakness. The third period is from Ja n u a ry onwards. It is characterized by loss of flesh, in creased weakness and irre g u la r appe tite. B reathing is feeble and fre quent; pain in region of liver. The fo u rth period is from May to June and Ju ly , when the dead flukes leave and the sym ptom s grow less. C attle can w ithstand the p arasite infestation b etter than sheep or goats. The outcome of all bad cases is very unfavorable. D rugs are of no avail and the best th a t can be done is to prevent the infestation and good feeding in w inter. I would recommend th a t advise and assistance to flock owners be obtained from your sta te v eterinarian, Dr. J. F. Morel, P o rt land, Oregon, or Dr. L ytle, sta te sheep inspector of Pendleton, Oregon. Both of these men are paid a salary to look out fo r your w elfare. P. H. EAGAN, D. V. M.
