At a previous meeting of the inter state commerce commission, towns 1 within a given radius of a terminal point were given the benefit of the terminal rate on all goods shipped by class rates. On the day on which the action taken by the interstate com - 1 merce commission was to hHve gone into effect, the railroad companies placed into effect a new tariff on com modity rates, naming commodity rates on practically everything that is shipped from eastern to western states. This action on the part of the railroads defeated the purpose and intentions of the interstate commerce commission, and the meeting referred to was for the purpose of ruising money to try the case before the interstate com merce commission. j for several A GREAT BARGAIN Sil k IINDEKSKIKIS $4 Vdlues $ 2.50 W H IL E THEY LAST Hampton & Co. her cruiser of this city, died alone while his companion, II. Hie aaesNcd valuation o f the proper ty of all public service corporations in Lane county, as fixed by the state tax commission is $3,366,156, and Lane county's share of the state tux tins year is $124,679. The amount of Lane county's state tax this year is s great surprise to county officials. It is two and a half times as great as this county 'a share of the atutc expenses lust year. No cx- plunuton of the great increase hus been given. The county court will have to increase the levy accordingly. As yet It hus not been decided what the new levy will be, but it is pretty safe to predict Unit it will be iilsiut 12 mills, aa compared with 10 mills lust year. The heavy state tax, togethei > with increases in other expenses of the county, will necessitate a slight in crease st least. The total valuation of all property inside the county outside of the puiilii service corporations is $.34,144,090, which, added to the assessed valuation of the property of the corporations, makes u total of $37,510,46 Witliu 12-mill levy the revenue would be $450.122.95.
