During his trial for murder j he seemed scarcely above oue of the j lowest animals In intelligence. | He hardly listened to witnesses and lawyers, and even the awful sentence from the lips of the judge did not arouse him from bis phleg matic stupor. During the weeks iu the prison wherb he awaited the execution of the penalty neither priest nor war- den could penetrate his dense in difference. He ate heartily and slept much of the time. He showed neither fear nor impatience. He was “ a hard case,” and even the prison chaplain despaired of him. There was, however, one woman visitor at the prison to whom he gave a little more attention than to the others. He could hardly be said to welcome her, but he did not totally ignore her. The day before he was to die she come early to his cell hearing a message from the warden. ‘‘I am to tell you.” she said, in in her friendly and sympathetic way, “ that you can have anything you want today. Is there something you would like?” “ Anything I want?” he repeated after her, without much show of in terest. “Yes, anything yon want.” “ Do you mean anything to eat and drink, or anything in the world?” he asked. “ I think we may almost say any thing in the world,” she replied. ‘That is, anything which you could have if you did not have to be here.” Then for the first time his face flushed and his eyes filled with tears. “O madam,” he said, in his broken English," there is something I want so very much. Harris, of Eugene, newly ap pointed opened this spring term of circuit court yesterday. Of the 23 cases appearing on the docket, all were civil, and for tho first time for many years the docket contains no applications for divorce. It is as serted by the “ dry” element that this absence of family discord in Benton county is due entirely to the beneficial influences of prohibition. The head of the family can no lon ger loaf around the whiskey shops and squander his wages, but instead remains at home und gets acquaint ed with his family, with the resnlt that discord is relegated to “ wit” districts.
