Semi-WeeHly Hera^ FRIDAY, OCT. 14, 1904. F rankness of Mannar. Orison Swott Maiden in “Success.” The re is no i ore delightful trait in the young i f the old than ab solute fraakntm and openness of nature, that tramparency of charac ter which lets >» see the best and the worst in them, their strong and their weak points, without any ef fort at concealment Everybody admires the open- hearted, the people who have noth ing to conceal, and who do not try to cover up their faults and weak ness« They are, as a rule, large- hearted and ignanimous. They inspire love and confidence, and, by their very frankness and simplicity, invite the same qualities in others, ~"S*cretiveness repels as much as frankness attracts. There is some thing about the very inclination to conceal or oover up which arouses suspicion and distrust. We can not have the same confidents In people who possess this trait, no matter how good they may seem to be, as in frank, sunny natures. Dealing with theso secretive people is like traveling on a stage coach on a dark night. There is always a feeling of uncertainty. We may come out all right, but there is a lurking fear of some pitfall or unknown danger ahead of us. We are uncomfortable because of the uncertainties. They may be all right, and may deal squarely with us, but the trouble is that we are not sure, and can not trust them. No matter how polite or gracious a secretive person may be, we can never rid ourselves of the feeling that there is a motive be hind his graoiouBness, and that he has an ulterior in view. He is al ways more or less of an enigma, be cause he goes through life wearing a mask. He endeavors to hide every trait that is not favorable to himself. Never, if he can help it, do we get a glimpse of the real man. How different the man who comes out in the open, who has no secrets, who reveals his heart to us, and who is frank, broad and liberal 1 How quickly he wins our confi dence ! How we all love and trust him ! We forgive him for many a slip or weakness, because he is al ways ready to confess his faults, and to make amends for them. If he has bad qualities, they are always in sight, and we are ready to make allowances for them. His heart is sound and true, his sympathies are broad and active. The very qual ities he possesses— frankness and simplicity— are conducive to the growth of the highest manhood and womanhood. ------------» ------------- The political somersaulters have put a few days in which to Belect their band wagons. It is truly a touching sight to be hold our strenuous politicians tum bling over each other in their zeal to save country. Several colleges are complaining of a shortage of fast runners for their foot ball teams. We recom mend one lvuropatkin. Gen. Corbin 1ms declared war against Cupid. Cupid belongs to the unconquerables. We advise the general to let him alone. The Kentucky man who married his mother-in-law for the sake of hnrmony is bound to make a howl ing success under any circumstances. A young Ralph Rose, the giant hammer-thrower, says he can lick Jeffries. He probably can if he gets a permit to use his sixteen-pound hammer on Jimmv. fA n E fficien t Officer. £ Not long since a petition contain ing some thirty names was present- to Goveruol Geo. Chamb lain, re questing the removal of J. W. Baker as state game warden on the grounds of diliatoryness and in efficiency. Tho Governor promptly refused to consider the petition, which it is stated, bore the names of both Democrats and Republicans, G ot . Chamberlain pointed oat the fact that Mr. Baker had proven him self a very alert and efficient officer, bad made more arrests and secured more conviotions of the game laws, during his brief term than had any of his predecessors during their en tire administrations, regardless of the Bmall compensation for his ser vices received from the state, and the limited means at hand to be em ployed in enforcing the game laws. In support of this statement the following official list convictions were submitted: OOxvicTiOxa Voit oam e l a w violations . Number of arrests and convictions for violating Game Laws from July I, 1903 to August 31, 1904, and fines not including costs of trial. Republican Speaker, for Cooe. i Notice of Final Settlement.
