J anuary 17. 1914 Life in theOregon Country Out of Ihc Ordinary Items in Our Ex changes— Other State News No charge is made for marriage licenses in Montana. That helps some. Salem hasnt’ got that "Coffee Club” yet. Probably afraid West will play Hobbs with it. The Cloverdale Courier. Linn- ton Leader and the Umatilla New Era, are three new exchanges in this office. Simon Buckner, the gold dem ocratic candidate for Vice Pres, with J. M. Palmer in 1896, died in Lexington Ky.. Jan. 8. The Leader is a new paper at Linnton, near Portland, by D. N. Byerlee recently of the VVillamina Times. The News wishes success. Addison Bennet, special staff writer for the Oregonian, was in Falls City last Saturday, collect ing material for a write-up of Polk county. County commissioners Petre and Wells inspected the Falls City rock crusher, Tuesday, with the idea of using it for county pur poses next Summer. The Oregon Teachers Monthly for January contains adozen time ly articles that are worthy of care ful reading. This monthly is 10c a copy, or $1 a year. The S. I’. Ky. will run a special stock-demonstration train over its Willamette valley lines, in Febru ary, for the purpose of reviving interest in dairying. The first number of the New Era, at Umatilla, Or., by Willis J. Pegg, has been received. Mr. Pcgg has made a good start, and The News wishes his new venture a continuous success. - State, county, school, and Falls City taxes total 331 mills, or over 3 i on the average cash;valuation. K. C. Clark very truly says: “ The government is exacting too much when it asks 3 to6 . ” Congressman W. C. Hawley favors The News with a copy of the “ Abstract of the 13th U. S. Census (1910) w ith Special Sup plement for Oregon, ” for which favor he has our thanks. There will be a sale of 740 acres of Indian lands at Siletz agency, March 9, 1914. The land is in tracts of from 20 to 80 acres, and will be sold at all cash each or 25% cash and balance in 3 years, at 7% int. The merchants in some of the smaller towns are abandoning their free delivery of goods, with the promise that in time the plan will bring a lowering of the price of goods proportionate to the cost of free delivery, Land slides in Tillamook county on the line of the P. R. & N. Ky. necessitates routing the mail for th at section via Sheridan and over the mountains. 11 would have been much more satisfactory to have built the railroud from Willamina instead of on the pres ent route. It is hinted that Senator Cham berlain is to be given a life job by President Wilson, thus leav ing the way clear for Gov. West to run for Senator. In this con nection the Salem Messengersays: “ Oswald West is slated for the United States Senate, so that he may shine as WE deserve.” Benjamin Franklin, the Ameri can printer’s patron saint, was born January 17, 1706 208 years ago today. During the Revolu tionary War, Franklin received a letter from a friend in which the statement was made that “ The Cream of the English Army is now in the field.” To this he re plied: “ I suppose you mean the whipped cream.” C.C. Goodwin, the accomplished veteran editor, of Salt Lake City, after a year’s retirement, has again assumed control of his old paper, Goodwins Weekly, and with J. G. Goodwin as manager is making a better Weekly than ever before, though it was always of high class under the Goodwin control. The News extends con- gatulations to C. C. Goodw in and Goodwins Weekly. Large numbers of unemployed workingmen are going up and down the main lines of travel in Western Oregon, seeking food, shelter and work. A few have made their appearence in Falls City this week. So far as The News can learn, those coming here are really seeking work, and to that extent deserve assistance and encouragement. Speaking of Governor West’s recentquestionableacts(by Hobbs and Lawson) in Eastern Oregon, the Oregonian says a whole chap ter in the few words following: “ It will probably occur to level headed persons that a determina tion . . to set up oneself as a mil itary dictator and supreme judge of law violations disqualifies one for Governor, no matter how sound may be his other policies. ” The News has received a copy of the Norfolk (Va.) Ledger-Dis patch of date Dec. 12, 1913, con taining the full textof an excellent address on the subject “ In Moral Training Give the Boy an Equal Chance with the Girl,” delivered at a meeting of the John Marshall Home and School League, by Mrs. B. E. Wasson, of Port Norfolk. Mrs. Wasson is a sister of the ed itor of The News, and her hus band is chief electrician in the Norfolk navy yard. 1914 Elections C ity N ew «, J a n u a r y 1?, 1914 News and Comment Supt.
