The La Grande Sugar Beet company has offered a prize of (30, divided as follows: $15 first, $10 second, and $5 third, for the best exhibits of sugar beets, testing highest in saccharin, tonnage per acre and perfection. A sweepstakes prize, divided: $20 first, $15 second, $10 third, and $5 fourth, Is offered for the best collective ex hibit of vegetables by any one pupil. And, lastly, the County Fair associa tion has offered individual prizes of the same amount as for adults, for the best productions given in thej list below: Potatoes, early and late: Corn, field and sugar; Pumpkins, Beets, table, su gar and mangel wurtzels; Cabbage; Carrots; Parsnips; Onions; White Beans; Tomatoes. Best loaf bread $5. Best plain sewing, $5. There shall be six specimens of each of the above named vegetables on exhibition at the county fair. The pupil Is to do all the work alone, except plowing, and must bring a written statement to this effect from father or mother. A plot of sugar beets not less than one rod square, the rows twenty In ches apart, the beets eight, ten or twelve Inches apart in the row, must be grown. RE8IDENCE NOT REQUIRED AFTER FINAL PROOF, MADE. Attorney D. W. Sheahan has re ceived notice of the decision of the La Grande land office In favor of his client, the defendant, in the con test case of Earl A. Pinkley vs El sie L. Halsey. The final proof made by the defendant's husband, Jobe Hal sey, was upheld and the claim is passed to patent. Mr. Halsey filed on the land a num ber of years ago and) made final com mutation proof, that was at first re jected but on appeal to the gener al land office was approved. After his death, Pinkley contested the claim on the ground that neither Mr. Halsey nor Mrs. Halsey resided on the claim after the final proof was made. The general land -office re fused to open the claim to contest ou the ground that "after submission of satisfactory proof neither the en trynan nor his wife was required to continue their residence on the land." Pinkley then contested on the grounds that the evidence of resi dence made in the final proof was un true. The contest was heard before Register B ram well and Receiver Eb erhard, who find the allegations of the contestant not borne out by the evidence. J. A. DENNY BUYS DOCTOR E. T. ANDERSON PROPERTY. Mr. and Mrs. J. A. Denny have pur chased the residence of Dr. E, T. Anderson on West Greenwood, just west of the city limits. The property consists of several lots and a large house. Price paid was $1800. Doctor Anderson has gone to Weis er, Ida., where he will locate. Mrs. Anderson end children will move to Weiser after the close of school here.
