INTERNATIONAL UNITY IN
THE INLAND EMPIRE.
A woman' becomes for the first
time in Norway a member of the
storting. Her political , platform is
concise, emphatic and significant.
She simply says: "Justice in great
things as well as in small things.
Is the . people's breath of life. I de
sire a government fujly democratic.
I will fight for the rights of individ
uals, of property and of the liberty; of
labor. I will work against laws of
compulsion everywhere in business
life, in the schools, in the church
and in the state."
Commerce and science, it has been
claimed, know no boundaries. Neither
it seems does agricultural art in thej
iniana lumpire. in iaci, it guus w iu
er and demonstrates the international
unity of the empire.
The minister of agriculture for Brit
lsh Columbia has invited the agri
cultural demonstration train of Wash
ington 8tate college and the Creat
Northern railway' to visit .the farmers
of his great province. The Invitation
has been accepted and the provincial
department of agriculture will itself
take part in the demonstrations giv
en on Canadian soil.
Such an Interaction of agricultural
activities is rather remarkable. ' It
Indicates the intimacy! of the relations
between this American state and that
Canadian province. It constitutes an
ideal use of the principle of reciproc- j

In France an establishment manu
factures alcohol from sawdust, get
ting 10 to 11 liters (nearly, three gal
lons) of alcohol from 220 pounds of
sawdust or about 1 quart from twen
ty pounds of sawdust. An American
company has secured the patent for
this country and is improving the
process. This opens a great oppor
tunlty In the Northwest,, where thous
ands of tons of sawdust annually go
to wasto. From each ton 10O quarts,
or nearly a barrel, of alcohol could
be produced. : .
Many thousands are starving to
death In China. There is plenty pro
duccd In China to enable all to live
In comfort. It is merely a) problem of
distribution and equity. On these
points the Chinese as a people limp
hadly, hence they starve. Nature
gives abundantly, man distributes
idiotically, and none more so than the
Chinese.
The first minimum wage bill ever
presented In any state legislature of
the United States, has been introduc
ed by Representative Stern in the
Wisconsin house of representatives.
8uch laws are In force In England,
Australia and New Zealand, The bill
Is backed by the Consumers' League
of Wisconsin and vests In the com
missioner of lubor the authority to
compel payment of living wages by
employers. The commissioner has
the additional power to doclde what

post imports were about $8,000,000.
